I visited Dubrovnik for the first time in July, and was captivated by this picturesque and historic city – especially the old town pictured here. Dubrovnik promotes itself as “the second most beautiful place on earth”, and when you see photographs like this you can understand why.
Dating back to the 7th century, the old town of Dubrovnik is one of the few cities in the world which still looks today much like it did hundreds of years ago. It is a picturesque city of cobbled streets, red tiled roofs and historic churches, monasteries and palaces, surrounded by massive stone walls.
As the entire old town is closed to cars, it is easy to explore on foot. There are some great restaurants inside (and outside) the old town, and the coffee shops (which serve great coffee!) along the central pedestrian mall (called Placa) create a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere in summer with their outdoor tables and umbrellas. There are many interesting shops tucked away in its shady backstreets too.
The shelling of Dubrovnik in 1991 and 1992 was a tragic situation which left more than half of the buildings damaged and nine palaces gutted by fire. Most of the city has been repaired now, but it is still easy to see evidence of the shelling.
I was in Dubrovnik for five nights, and each morning before breakfast I walked down the road from my hotel to this spot where I could see the old town framed by these palms and a magnificent display of purple bougainvillea. On the last morning I was there, the sky was quite stormy looking, and it created marvellous lighting conditions which were very different to the first four days. I waited until a break in the cloud caused the sun to shine on the old town and bracketed a few shots to capture this composition.

Well framed with the flowers and the palms, a very light sunny view on Dubrovnic.

Very beautiful and nicely framed, David, and I like that little boat at lower center! Including the purple flowers is a great touch.
North Korea, wow, what takes you there? I hope you get some great shots (to the extent allowed, we don't want your next series to be "The Gulag from Inside.")

This place is indeed beautiful and I like the way you look this place. The palm trees and the purple flowers give good decorations to this place and create the right atmosphere. The clarity and details are very well managed and controlled. Excellent shot and a pleasant trip. Have a wonderful time.

A very scenic & colorful spot. Good to see this place didn't sustain too much damage, during the breakup of the former republic of Yugoslavia, at least on a superficial level.

David...what's the first?
About being the second most beautiful... Your work here David, depicted a Mediterranean ambience in a way. It must be those palm trees diagonally framing the old city and the bright sunny day outlook of it all.
You are going places.

Such a pretty city and people wanting to destroy it! TRAGIC, indeed!!
I have never been to Dubrovnic but it appears to be amazingly beautiful. Your composition with those flowers and palm trees add that extra touch.

very beautifull - it really is!
Great compo of different colours. The red rubber boat gives additional attraction.
Very well done. TFS. Thomas

Hello David, this is truly a beautiful place. The white marble streets are a delight and a walk along the walls is one of the best "city walks" in Europe. Here you have a wonderful composition with the palms in the foreground and I love the colourful purple flowers on the right.

I love bouganvilla and I've never seen it captured quite so well. The colors seem very natural too me and I see that's the common opinion. The framing is outstanding as well with that diagonal of plants framing the finger of the old town projecting into the turquoise sea. You are right, they are VERY diplomatic people. HLJ, Pat
