Sunflowers as they once were
The slogan of the Croatian National Tourist Board is "The Mediterranean as it once was". That seems especially true on the island of Lastovo, a 47-km2 island in the county of Dubrovnik-Neretva, perhaps due to the relatively long ferry journey and the lack of sumptuous beaches and mass tourism facilities. The main ferry leaves from Split despite Lastovo being closer to Dubrovnik than to Split. However, there’s also a maritime link to Dubrovnik (no car) during the summer months. As one could expect, Lastovo’s economy relies mainly on agriculture and tourism. The island was closed to foreigners until 1989 owing to its importance as a military outpost.
This photo was taken in Lastovo Town where nearly half of remaining eight hundred islanders live. This is a charming and authentic village built on a slope and facing inland (south), which is rather unusual for an insular village. But the sea is not far off, less than a 10-minute walk down a steep path, or via a narrow winding road. Several of the houses are however abandoned or in bad condition, but in a way that just adds to the charms of the place. If not living too far away, that might even be a wonderful place for a newly retired wishing to acquire an old house at a reasonable price and eventually slowly restore it. Photo taken around 17 h, which explains the yellowish tone. I like that time of the day in these Mediterranean places, often calm and full of nature sounds and smells, and sometimes bringing relief after the very hot hours.

It must be very interesting to visit an island that has been closed for foreign visitors for such a long time.
Beautiful afternoon light.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Claude - This does have a lovely rural feel. I particularly like the colours of the sunflowers in a brighter version of the colours of the old house. You have managed to create a shot which captures a bygone look, attractive work.
Warm regards Rosemary

I like how you have made the sunflowers your focal image, positioned them strongly and emphasised your intention with your title.
The flowers are perfectly supported by the warm sun, in the b/g, where the buildings are being gilded by its effects.
You have used an effective shallow dof.
Have a great day,

what a nice image. The colors are all kept in warm tones and that makes this picture very pleasant. The sunflowers very smartly placed in the corner of the composition provide very eye catching foreground. I also like the building which work as a background. Its old walls add very much to the picture. Well presented!

You chose a very nice picture with the focus on the sunflower.
Through the light background blurred, becomes the flower more activated.
Nice picture with pleasant colours.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,

Lovely light; lovely composition. The sunflower is given prominence over the village view, which is unusual and effective: the slight defocussing of the background adds a sort of nostalgic feel to the shot. I'm reminded of one I posted earlier. For the record, here it is!

Lovely shot, Claude. Just lovely. Sunflowers with that warm light and this kind of old, weathered building--you can't beat that. Thanks for sharing.
