Ulica od Pustijerne in the old town (stari grad) of Dubrovnik.
It always surprises me how easy it is to get away from tourist crowds, even in holiday honeypots like this. Only a couple of hundred yards away is the main square rimmed with cafes and carpeted with people. And the building on the right is in fact the cathedral, so it's not as if we were miles from the centre. But this area seemed much more authentic, even rather run-down in a picturesque, photogenic sort of way. Here we see local people doing normal things, rather than pointing cameras at each other. I'm the exception of course.

Dubrovnik is a small town,so it´s not easy to come up with something new.But this scene is great and conveys well the atmosphere of "real" Dubrovnik.
Scratched facades, laundry drying outside and finally your monochrome treatment make the composition superb!
Beautiful and atmospheric composition.
Have a nice day

I like this, it's like the image is divided into two halves of different lives. I like the details such as the washing hanging up on the building and the two girls and a baby give good life to the right side. Nice choice for black and white, it somehow suits the environment well.

J'aime les images et les lieux authentiques qui permettent de mieux comprendre la vie quotidienne.
L'habitat est présenté ici sous sa forme naturelle.
Le choix du noir et blanc accentue le côté véridique.
Très bonne journée.

this is a nice photo to be a neighbor with. as is your entire gallery - a great example of someone with good color _and_ B&W vision at the same time, which is not often the case (mostly it's none of the above).

Super photo of this old town street scene, yes I love to view how the local live and their buildings, great in B@W, even the washing looks good. Tfs,
Have a great day,

I have to say, this is a delightful b&w shot. There is excellent contrast between the total black and almost white areas, with a wide range of shades of grey. (Oops, I'd better watch what I say about shades of grey!)
The subject is appealing for its unfussy and very natural content. There are good lead lines and a wealth of details to explore.
My warm regards,

I had the same experience in Dubrovnik of people living ordinary lives just one or two blocks away from the tourist shops and tourist restaurants. I always do my best to get off the beaten track as quickly as possible wherever I go. There are lots of interesting details of daily life in this photo, not just the very typical laundry. A fine and very enjoyable picture.

I like the split in the center of the image. An excellent genre with excellent B&W treatment!

yes, you are right and I was the exeption as well!
Although black and white photography is not a bad choice, what more it is great photo, knowing this place, I think this made the atmosphere of the site much grimmer than it actually is.

Very attractive daily life-picture.
Many years ago I've visited Dubrovnik and I remember it as a rather small town. Meanwhile, tourism has grown tremendously there. So I feared that there would be hordes of tourists in every street. But I see here that the authentic Dubrovnik still appears to be found.
Beautifully with the passage under the building and the highly weathered facades. The laundry may of course not be absent.
Best regards, Paul

It's my kind of style Will, off the beaten track away from the *gly snap-snap tourist photographers! What a find, this shot looks certainly great in mono version, super detailing with immense of good gritty details, factual and cropped, indeed a very atmospheric kind of oldie feel in it and your pp works a real treat really compliments the subject. People are always vital elements to this type of shot and you've got spot on. I think, this is as close to perfection as you can get, not only the object being photographed, but also the variety of textures, the light, the shadows, superb tonal range, the contrast and the composition are what they should be to make it perfect. Congratulations for this outstanding shot you did it seamlessly....
Have a great wkend

A great B&W composition. I like the contrasts between the modern girls on the left (one a modern mum) and the lady on the right (who seems to have spotted you) with her washing. Each side of this image could be a standalone photo but they work well together here. Nice detail in the architecture.
Subhogen (4067) 2014-01-25 6:25
A fine B&W composition from the alleys of a city. I like the division of the photo into 2 levels. Superb detailing on the walls, it adds so much of atmosphere to this shot. Thanks for sharing a good one.

there are 2 ways to go when visiting such Iconic and well-photographed cities....get the usual post-cars shots, and or get some unique original shots and really hunt for them.
thats what you have here, a more original and unique showing of Dubrovnik.
and like you mentioned, its only a stones throw away from the crowds - how awesome is that!
nice to see the locals, nice to see the laundry hanging outside, and the rustic walls steal the show in my opinion.
interesting subjects all over the frame here.
good post for TE

Hi Will. Without color I see only what is truly essential. Black and white images have their own fascination. Your photo is a good example. In Dubrovnik has for many years but little changed. That's what's the attraction for photographers.
rigoletto (34269) 2014-01-28 7:32
high will. i well remember how great it was to get lost in the narrow steets of dubrovnik. as many have noticed, it is a well presented film-decor like city, too attractive for medieval lovers. here, the monochrome treatment enhances the textures, conveying that ancient feeling. superb cadrage too, dividing the scene into two, one being up, the other being down. the tunnel is too curious and inviting us to discover the blind and steep alleys.
delpeoples (54659) 2014-01-30 4:35
I really like this for so many reasons. Top of all of them is that it reminds me of Naples. The hanging laundry, the people leading their lives, the sense of dynamism and real life. Then there's the excellent B&W conversion. Superb contrasting, deep black tones and well exposed whites. Excellent image.
subhendu_bagchi (25973) 2014-02-03 1:32
wow, it is beautiful. Like the monochrome transformation, as it suits best to your composition. Great use of light. Like the dark tones in the frame. Excellent one. Tfs.

I certainly missed a lot of posts (due to my absence here on TE), but I like this photo for the following reasons:
a) your showing of a seemingly two-sides of a story on a single-frame;
b) your three subjects, (if I may include the lady on the right), conveying the depth and your distance towards your subjects, and you capturing them in an animated mode; and
c) your excellent treatment of this image in B&W.
Great shot! :-)
I immediately thought if this photo was under your theme ‘Two Girls’ when I opened it, but then again, “oh not, they’re three” ...maybe, in Will’s Monochrome...but not yet there.

i share your experience concerning the tourist crowds. It is easy to find genuin environments here, this picture is a good evidence of that. It is also more interesting after seeing the famous "musts" in the central parts. Nice split of this picture, with an interesting glimpse of the daily life behind the scenes, tfs!
