This is the pantheon built to commemorate all Bulgarians who died in the Serbo-Bulgarian war in 1885. It is located on a hill in the small village Gurgulyat, about 15 km south from Slivnitsa. The monument was built in 1985 to commemorate the 100th anniversary from the war.
Nowadays the village population is less than 40 people, and its remoteness from central roads makes the pantheon one of the least visited spots connected with Bulgarian history.
Knowing very well the situation in the region, I feel as if this pantheon nowadays symbolizes the neglected parts of Bulgarian heritage. Here there's no unique architecture of old houses, no picturesque villages with beautiful tower clocks but still there's history here. Yes, predominantly history of war, but still history. And while nowadays some places need special advertising of tourist spots to get noticed by the ordinary tourist, and don't attract visitors just like that, without any boasting, monuments like this will remain in the background.
Perhaps a small flash of light might have come from an (un)usual place: The EU funds. There's a small hotel with a restaurant in the village funded by EU programs for developing rural tourism. There might be some place for optimism here. We'll see. |
