Photographer’s Note
‘Melnik architecture’
Here I posted two more pictures of the beautiful town of Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria.
For some people it’s also the most romantic town.
I couldn’t decide which picture I would take as main photo and which one I would post the workshop.
My final decision was made because I’m not really a very big fan of symmetrical forms and the only exception on that symmetry on the photo in the workshop are the shadows on the façade.
But I do like the early evening light. I also did a little saturation.
Melnik is situated in Blagoevgrad Province, in the heart of the Pirin Mountains.
The town has 96 buildings that testimony the very interesting architecture.
What I specially like about this place is that also the new buildings are built in the traditional style.
From http://www.geocities.com
The charm of the Melnik house:
‘Its characteristic features are related to the geographic factor. The sheer screes and the limited terrain compelled people here to fight for every square foot of land.
That is why the Melnik houses seem perched one above the other, so close as though they are whispering something to each other. Again, to cope with the slope, people here built the basement of stone at several levels where the thick wine matured. Above is the storey, towering gracefully, projecting and supported by many cantilevers.
The white facades are framed with dark boards and the windows are grouped several together in an elegant fashion.
The interiors usually exhibit ceilings of carved wood, chimney-pieces, decorative cupboards of colour woods, murals and even stained glass.
But apart from the generally typical features, every house here has an individuality of its own, its own history and life.’

It is indeed very unusual and distinctive architecture. The number of windows will make the rooms very light. I can imagine it was not easy to find a suitable composition. This works well so we can see all the surrounding vegetation and the extreme incline on which the houses are built. I also like the WS image of an individual house. Unlike you, I think symmetry can be quite satisfying and the WS is a perfect example.

This one has very strong geometry, Paul, strong shapes that fill the frame nicely (almost Braque-like). The colour is good to, with good saturation. It i a nice presentation of this 'romantic' little town. Regards Kevin

Hello Paul,
You perfectly build an excellent POV for adding three splendid corners of architectural beauties. Low angled lights are creates soft tones on facades even with shadow plays in your good selected complementary post. The green surround increase contrast there. Good clarity and sharpness. Congratulations.
Best Regards,
