Photographer's Note

Ursus thibetanus is a medium-sized species of bear seen across the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, Taiwan, Korea, northeastern China, the Russian far east and Japan. In Hindu mythology, the Asian black bear Jambavan assists Rama in finding his wife Sita and battle her abductor, Ravana. In Japanese culture, the black bear is traditionally associated with the mountain spirit. It is a vulnerable species, mostly due to deforestation and hunting for its body parts. Asiatic black bear is the species most commonly kept in cruel captivity conditions to harvest bile, a digestive juice produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder in China and South Korea. The bears’ bile is a valuable commodity for sale as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. It is also the species most used in bear baiting, a cruel blood sport still visible in Pakistan. Dancing bears are kept by itinerants to perform in villages and festivals. That individual was seen in Sofyiski zoopark (Зоопаркът София), Lozenets. Source : wiki; wspa.org.uk; youtube
