Photographer’s Note

Etara is a museum reconstruction of 18th to 19th century craftsmen's town in the heart of the Balkan Mountains. Different crafts, like wool washing and dying, carpet weaving, hats and clothes sawing, knife production were and are powered by the running river water. This production spread all over the Ottoman empire. After the national liberation in 1878 this local production could hardly compete with European industry and gradually declined, giving place to big town factories.
