Photographer's Note

I am not 100% certain but I think this laser show is commemorating the heroic Vasil Levski, a revolutionary who was hung by the Ottomans on 18 February, 1873 aged 35. So it probably was him as this was taken on the 19th February. "Vasil Levski's hanging is observed annually across Bulgaria on 19 February instead of 18 February, due to the erroneous calculation of 19th-century Julian calendar dates after Bulgaria adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1916."

The white, green & red are the colours of the Bulgarian flag.

I kept the flyer advertising this event and will edit this note if not.

He is credited with stating that "if I lose my life against the Ottoman Turks, only one man has lost, but if I win, the whole country of (liberated) Bulgaria wins. Bulgaria finally was liberated in the Russo Turkish war of 1878. Pity we do not have more politicians of his ilk today, who put their country first and their own interests 2nd.

The backdrop is the Lovech Citadel overlooking the town.

"Bulgaria had been a widely autonomous principality since 3 March [Old.Style. 19 February] 1878, when it was liberated from Ottoman rule in the wake of the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78). Although it was still technically under the suzerainty of the Sublime Porte, this was a legal fiction that Bulgaria only acknowledged in a formal way. It acted largely as a de facto independent state. On 18 September [O.S. 6 September] 1885, it had unified with the Bulgarian-majority Ottoman autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia."
