Photographer’s Note

Melnik comes into history in Roman time. It became a part of the Bulgarian state in the middle of 9th century and was conquered by the Eastern Roman Emperor Basil II ca. 1000 AD. In 1209 it became the capital of an independent feudal principality ruled by Despot Slav, a descendant of the Asen dynasty. Here, his tower.
