Photographer’s Note

They can still be seen here and there in the streets of Sarajevo, the scars of mortar shells that killed civilians during the siege of the city by Bosnian Serb forces in the 1990's. Where several people were killed by the same shell, the scars in the paving were filled with a red resin, making them look a bit like roses. This one was very near the hotel where I stayed.
More than 10 500 people, including 1 600 children, were killed from early april 1992 until late August 1995 by Bosnian Serb artillery or snipers, deliberately targeting civilians from the mountains surrounding the city.
