Photographer’s Note
‘Brussels - Summer in the City’
A few pictures of the flower carpet on Brussels’ Grand’Place have been posted already on TE. This picture is taken while people are still making the carpet.
When the job was finished the biggest part (the complete center) of the Grand’Place was covered by about 800.000 begonias.
It’s an event that takes place every two years on August, 15th and the carpet can be admired during three days (and four nights). So for to see the next flower carpet in Brussels people will have to wait till August, 15th, 2010. :) Write it down.
While the main component are the begonias, other natural elements are used to give the carpet its necessary colours. Dahlias form the blue entrelacs; the green colour of course is grass and tree bark is used for the brown nuances on the background.
Not only the rich range of colours is the reason why begonias are chosen.
These flowers have a very good resistance to bad weather and strong sunshine (hmm, no problem this year). Further on the begonias guarantee the carpet freshness during the three days it can be admired.
Belgium is the world’s largest producer of begonias (yes, we got more than chocolates and beer) and every year about 60 million begonia tubers are cultivated, mostly around Ghent (Lochristi, ...).
The biggest part of the production is exported.
These facts and more information can be found on:
http://www.flowercarpet.be
BTW, often I see that people post more pictures of the same subject (for instance taken from another POV) in a workshop. Can anyone explain me please how to do that ? Thanks ! Paul

Hallo Paul,
Bedankt.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John.

Hi Paul,
I think you have chosen a good BG building which is very colourful if not as colourful as the flowers. By doing so, you have almost completely blocked out the glaring sky, yet maintaining the flower carpet as the main subject in the FG. Good work.
I have given a note in the discussion about posting to Ws.

Hello Paul, I've lived in Brussels almost for three years but never had the opportunity to visit Grand Place in this period. Really an eye-catching photo with the colours of begonias, however the clouds could seem much better if the photo was taken in a more convenient time. Regards to Brussels, Tolga

Paul when I see photos like this it brings to light some aspects of European culture that many in the west never get the chance to see. This event is simply amazing and a real delight to see. Your second photo from this location is a real treat too. This one explains how its created. Both photos are outstanding photos to say the least. Thanks for sharing!
