Photographer’s Note

Gouvy is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Luxembourg. On 1 January 2006 the municipality had 4,690 inhabitants. The total area is 165.11 km², giving a population density of 28 inhabitants per km².

The municipality was created in 1977 from the amalgamation of the former municipalities of Beho, Bovigny, Cherain, Limerlé, and Montleban. Villages in the municipality include Baclain, Bistain, Brisy, Cherapont, Cierreux, Courtil, Deiffelt, Halconreux, Halonru, Honvelez, Langlire, Lomré, Ourthe, Rettigny, Rogery, Steinbach, Sterpigny, Vaux and Wathermal. The administrative headquarters are situated in Bovigny.

For the lovers of the nature, Gouvy is one of the richest communes of the country in natural reserves because of the 11 reserves of the R.N.O.B. (Réserves Naturelles et Ornithologiques de Belgique) covering a total area of 40 hectares. Nowadays, if the affection and the confidence of the people of the Ardennes are difficult to conquer, they are big-hearted, proud of the past, nature fanatic...

Having the advantage of being situated in a beautiful nature without pollution, the commune of Gouvy offers an exceptional landscape to the inhabitants and visitors. This is a region where you can find wooded hills, large valleys, little and welcoming villages...>

In our immense spaces, the tourist is not considered as a product to exploit but as a person and the inhabitants like to speak with them.

Today, the Ardennes are no longer cut of this hectic world. The rhythm of life is different and if the people have now a lot of evidence of their past, our little villages could have combined the pleasures of a healthy, simple and quiet life.

Yes it's an interesting supject rolls of hay. It's not easy to make just the..... shot you want. I hope you like this one,

What a beautiful sky you have captured here. It really makes the picture. However, the hay bale in the foreground is essential to the composition and the power line gives depth to the scene. Well done.

Ik zie flinke bewerkingen in het blauw, maar dat kan de foto wel hebben. Zo'n donkere en dreigende lucht draagt de foto en tesamen met die rollen in de voorgrond geeft dat een mooi totaalbeeld weer.

I like it alot, and even though I am not fold of including telephone wires in images, I think the diagonal lines created adds a fine touch here. A fine rural scene with those large round bales. Good colors and splendid details. Well seen and TFS. Gerald

On ne moissonne pas du bon blé d'un mauvais champ.
Très belle perspective d'un champ, l'effet est d'autant plus accentué par la présence de poteaux électriques (ou téléphoniques) dont les fils s'amusent à pendre tels des lambrequins.
Le ciel est d'une rare beauté.

De foto geeft me inderdaad het gevoel dat de streek hoog gelegen is al zie je dan geen bergen. Ik denk dat de prachtige lucht hier een belangrijke rol in speelt.
Verder geven de balen hooi en de electriciteitsdraad tot aan de horizon een gevoel van oneindigheid.

The farmers don't think of photographers when they scatter the fields with rolls of hay so you're right, it's not easy to find a good composition. :) However, you found the way. The foreground roll is placed in a perfect place in the frame and shooting down the field we can see the cutting lines which work well as lead-in. You have captured the clouds beautifully, making them appear 3D on the screen. Well done

Inderdaad die type rollen maken een mooi diepte foto, ook de draden lopen mooi mee naar de achtergrond.
U had een beetje geluk met de wolken zodat de samenstelling mooi verdeeld is en de kleuren netje bij elkaar passen.
Goed gezien Jaap, excellent foto werk.

Hello Jaap,

This is the first time I've seen rolled bails of straw in your magnificent gallery, but "variety..." as they say, "is the spice of life." You always show your versatility — whether with castles, windmills, or fields of tulips. The common denominator that is never missing, they are all magnificently presented. Here the golden hues of the straw, remind me of Smetana's music, "Ma Vlas." Incidentally, recently I went to my high school reunion, and one of my classmates who owns a tugboat business took us for a river cruise. I remembered your father was a tugboat captain. It was very enjoyable little cruise.

Hoi Jaap,

Mooie plaat. De lucht is mooi donker. In RAW geschoten en bijgewerkt? Wel heel mooi dat diepe blauw en het contrasts mooi met het gele hooi en de ronde balen in het weiland. De lijn van de elektriciteitsdraden geeft een mooie leidraad voor het oog richting de horizon. Mooi!

Very good shot this one, Jaap. Crisp details all the way to the horizon, and a good choice of angle to benefit from the staggered arrangement of the hay ralls, enhancing a deep perspective impression. Nice lighting and fine textures to be found in the clouds, well captured.

The light, as in most of your shots is delicious. The FG hay roll is placed in a perfect place in the frame and shooting down the field we can see the electric lines which work well as lead-in. Now I understand that this view is the most typical for Belgium:)) I'd crossed the whole country from Blankenberge to Arlon and from Liege to Blankenberge and these rolls were the most common view from the train window:)
