Photographer's Note

Digging the Schipdonkkanaal was with the digging of the Leopold Canal one of the first major infrastructure in the young Belgium.
The flax industry around Kortrijk, especially retting of flax in the Lys, this river was seriously polluted. To avoid this polluted water to flow through Ghent was upstream of Ghent dug a connection between the Lys and the North Sea. So we got more control over the water level of the river Lys and one could avoid flooding in Ghent. The additional function as a convenient waterway included.
Digging and finishing of the canal ran between 1846 and 1860. Already building the chieftain at the junction of the canal with Ghent-Bruges would only let him take four years to complete
