While on TE much attention goes to monumental churches, gigantic buddha's, fabulous mosques and heaps of incense, these most humble relics of devotion are overseen.
Madonna's such as these can be found in manier European cities (just in Antwerp, which isn't the largest city, there still are about 650 of them !) People sought protection and salvation from them so adorned their houses, alleys and streetcorners with tiny statuettes.
This particular one is to be found in an almost unknown alley (although I've seen pictures on TE ;-) ). What struck me is the smoothness of the statue compared to its flaky surroundings and the moulded, crooked hood above. |

Nice picture Walter. I truly agree with ur observation. I would have liked the bottom cropped a bit, the pipes distracts sometimes. Wish you could have taken this picture from an elevation. Nice shot though.

is the Madonna perhaps porcelain
surely something to withstand the elements
wonderful contrast with the flaking paint
very good eye Walter - and also the note
with your references to monumental churches and humble relics -
i think i know what my next round of uploads will be -
comparing/contrasting of cathedrals/churches
ps - glad the light bulb above her head wasn't on
