Photographer’s Note
The place has been especially confessed by the Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Orval, and abbey entrusted founded in 1070 by the widow of earl Arnulf II of Chiny to Benedictines from Calabria, which proceeded in 1110 in the hands of regular chancel lords. In 1132 came in their place French cisterciënzers. The abbey of Orval knew a large flowering in 13de and the 14de centuries. Under Abbot E. Henrion (gest. 1729) were them a centre of jansenisme, but in 1750, most of jansenistische the monks were removed. Of the medieval abbey, in 1637 by French hugenoten, rests destroyed only share (among other things the portal) of the splendid church (1190-1206) in Cistercian construction style. Also the new complex (1761-1782), built towards plans of Laurent Benoît Dewez, was devastated by the french (1793). In 1796, the abbey was raised. In 1926, came the ruin in the possession of the staircase monks. The current bldg. complex (by H. Vaes), with work of numerous Belgian artists (among other things O. Jespers, M. Huet), was set up (1926-1948) on the bases of 18de-eeuwse the abbey; the church accommodates a cross way of Albert Servaes. The abbey has medicine spice garden and - museum. This part I have from my Encarta encyclopedie.
About the photo. It an amazing place. With the ruines you can made a lot of photo's when you have eyes for details. The trappist beer is something else you have to try there, it's realy a good beer. I hope you like the shot. There where a few members who asking me for another Orval shot, well here it is.

Hoi Jaap,
Mooie diepte foto Jaap,
Groeten,

Beautyfull light and composition that brings the best of this ruins. The charged sky and the green treen and garden add a nice contrast to the stones colors.

It's another quite pleasant one from this place, Jaap. Precisely framed, with a good contrast and fine light. The gravel path bending towards the arched passageway makes for a nice invitation to the viewer's eye.

Bonjour Jaap,

Best regards.
Daniel.

Hi Jaap - amazing contrasts again, the belltower has survived the times much better than the ruined parts at left, the off centre position of the tower also works well to balance the compo.

Hi Jaap,
I was hopoing that you would show more pictures of these ruins. This is another great composition and perspective leading to that dominant tower, standing proudly against the sky. Excellent lighting and textures of the stone and the usual beatiful cloudy sky that enhance the image. Congratulations, again!

Hi Jaap
I know you can't resist mentioning the trappist beer again. I suspect you had a good amount of it! Still, it did not affect your picture taking skills. I love this POV most of all as it allows us to see the majestic quality of the building and site. Nice colouring and a pleasant distribution of light. Well done, and keep drinking.

Hi Jaap,
Well composed and shot from a superb POV. I like how you have given ample play to the clouds here, which are textured and prominent. The tower really lures the eye and the full beauty of the structure is well displayed. The exposure level seems just right, with you containing the strong light on the left portion of the frame. Well done.

Hello Jaap,
I love the exceptional colours of this photo. The combination of warm shades of the walls and the cold grey sky is both pleasant and interesting enough to create a great experience. The composition is beautiful as well, even though I still not sure if I like how the tower is leaning to the right. Its slant is in harmony with the diagonal top edge of the ruins in the left part of the frame, but in the same time is a little disturbing. Anyway, a great one.
Thanks,
Marek
