Illusion, a photo from Liege, Wallonia

Photographer's Note

One of the platform of the new station in Liège. Liège is a major node in the European high speed rail network; an indispensable link between London, Paris, Brussels and Germany. The new Liège Guillemins station is builded by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava.

There is a strange illusion on this photo: the frame seems to be curved. But it is not!

Un des quais de la nouvelle gare de Liège construite par le célèbre architecte Catalan Santiago Calatrava Valls. Il a été choisi pour son expérience dans la réalisation de trois autres gares en Europe : la gare de Stadelhofen à Zurich, la gare de Lyon-Saint-Exupéry TGV (ex. Satolas) et la gare d'Orient à Lisbonne.

Il y a une illusion étrange dans cette photo: l'encadrement semble courbé... Mais je vous assure que ce n'est pas le cas!

inutile de dire que cette photo me rappelle une certaine que je viens juste de poster, oui, Calatrava est vraiment un génie, je le répète, j'avais peur de vois pousser cette gare , maintenant, je l'ai vraiment adoptée.
Joli POV en fin de quai, une photo que j'ai prise au grand angle d'ailleurs et postée il y a quelques mois.
Belles couleurs un peu réchauffées et lumières bien gérées.

Bonjour Catherine,
Très belle photo, avec une excellente illusion d'optique, due à une perspective très intéressante (pas le cadre noir, mais la structure elle-même, à mon sens).
Structure polymorphe qu'on dirait tout droit sortie de cronenberg ou de bellmer, ou de projets archi remisés au placard pour cause d'originalité formelle excessive!
Ca fonctionne bien sur l'écran en tout cas!

The illusion or not is really makes the roof appear so dynamic. I like the other roofs too ... curving up like uphill highways and to join more & bigger roof in the background. Well spotted & captured. Regards. Latiff.

Hello Catherine.
You are right! There is an optical illusion here. Very strange. Even if I cover the top half of the photo, the bottom still looks curved.
Anyway, it's a strking shot, beautifully exposed and very sharp throughout. I particularly like your viewpoint looking up at the curved roof, and the presence of the rather glum looking man shuffling along the platform. I guess he isn't going on a long trip to London or Paris!

Encore une superbe réalisation du Grand Calatrava!
Ton point de vue est bien choisi car il permet de voir l'architecture des quais comme du hall de la gare que l'on aperçoit dans le fond.
Photo de très belle qualité (couleur, contraste,netteté)

The roofline is very unique and I'm sure it is what creates the illusion. I like the placement of the man in this shot to give some scale and life to this shot.

Bien joué pour l'effet d'optique. Elle aura fait "couler" beaucoup...pas d'encre mais de photos cette superbe gare:-)))à 5' de chez moi.
Un tout bon cadrage avec ce monsieur sur le quai, le tout sous un très joli ciel.

Pour un peu, c'est une semelle d'espadrille géante version Gulliver qui menace le voyageur.

Je suis nouveau et je découvre
Etant Liégeois, ayant entendu toutes les critiques sur cette gare, bravo pour cette angle de prise de vue sur une gare qui n'est pas terminée. Pour l'heure de prise de vue, c'est sûrement celle du train, mais la bonne pour les couleurs chaudes de la photo (+ polarisant)
