Photographer’s Note

Pont Albert 1er (or Pont Du Roi Albert) links the Districts of Boverie Longdoz and the Boulevard d'Avroy in Liege.

The first bridge was completed in 1866. It was then called Bridge of Commerce, and a right of passage of three cents was imposed for anyone who wanted to cross. In 1903, the city of Liege bought this toll, and in 1905, as part of the World Expo, a new bridge was built to meet the growing traffic.

In 1940, the bridge was sabotaged to slow the German advance. It was therefore replaced by a provisional bridge. The new bridge, now called Albert Ier in tribute to the king knight was not rebuilt until 1957.
