Previous Saturday a very good winter day, a pity without sun.
I have already more pictures taken of Ghent but never out these angle with these new lens of this subject.
We see the Sint Michaels bridge and the Sint Michaels church.
Two young people on foreground, enjoy of these nice city, notwithstanding the temperatures + 6° Celsius.
I hope that you enjoy of these picture.
St Michael's Church is a church in the Belgian city of Ghent capital of the province of East Flanders.
Already in 1105 stood in the same place on the Lys chapel. The present church was begun in 1440 in late Gothic style and in fact finished only in 1825.
Of the Romanesque church, which originated here around the end of the 11th century, there are no obvious remains more. The 13th century was very disastrous, with several fires. In 1440 it was decided to build in the late Gothic style. Completely new church
In the early 16th century nave and transept were completed. In 1623, then it was early Gothic choir replaced by a copy of Brabant Gothic with ambulatory and five radiating chapels. Characteristic of the late Brabant Gothic is the use of sand limestone, the imaginative cross rib, network and star vaults, and the high, wide lancet. Is remarkable about this church, the Gothic architecture lived in an era of renaissance and baroque.

Nice picture of the winter season with a dull sky.

Beautiful image of this Church. Very detailed and perfect exposure. the simplicity of the scene is what draws me to it! Nothing takes away from one another in the entire scene, no obstructions, nothing out of place. It is as if one is sitting there on the waterway enjoying the peace and calm.
besnard (54619) 2014-01-06 23:27
Une bonne prise de ces superbes bâtiments. Le gris du ciel est en harmonie.
Amitiés et bonne journée.

Indeed the weather was not favorable this day but the Ghent architecture is fantastic in every light and you show it masterfully. Spectacular composition with the bridge and this majestic cathedral. The two sitting people give life to the scene.
Warm regrads malgo

Good Morning John,
I love the scenes that you show us of Ghent and vow to visit this place every time I see its beauty. The lack of sunshine is no problem, it is winter!
You have used good compositional skills, the canal emerging from the r/h corner and guiding past the figures (important in the overall impact) towards the bridge which takes us, on an opposing diagonal, to the church. The colours may be muted, quite natural for early January, but the details are sharp and accessible.
All the best for the New Year,
Subhogen (4067) 2014-01-07 0:33
Beautiful composition from Ghent on a not so bright day.
The Church has very nice architecture and detailing that you have captured portrays it very well. The bridge and the canal are also attractive elements of this photo and are well placed. Thanks for sharing a scenic shot with rich clarity.
quovadis (1092) 2014-01-07 0:55
Welcome John in the New Year !!!
You produced a clean cut shot again. The church and the atmosphere around it is well composed, everything seems to be in the right place. Grey sky gives a bit contrast to the almost entirely brownish-beige tone of the exposure. It's hard to imagine such an empty city center right here in Asia. Great presentation and thank you for sharing the world !!!
jurek1951 (42194) 2014-01-07 1:23
a beautiful photo of this place with splendid composition and attractive details, great mediterranean lights and the POV is excellent,

another nice frame from you. Like the architectures at back, like the bridge on the top of the canal. Great soft light and endless depth. Great frame. Tfs.
trevormoffiet (3112) 2014-01-07 1:50
A very nice composition of the church and its surroundings. Exquisite detail in this flat light. The few people in the photo provide an extra lift of interest to this winter scene.
snunney (88421) 2014-01-07 2:29
A well chosen point of view to encompass this selection of delightful architecture. The two girls in the foreground animate the scene. The sky was grey, but you have known how to bring out the colours and detail to great effect. The massive church is very impressive indeed.
switch2ayan (169) 2014-01-07 2:55
Very Happy New Year..
This is a very nice Landscape with beautiful weather. Appropriate sharpness and excellent exposure. Moreover the place is really good and you have presented it very well.
holmertz (43767) 2014-01-07 3:23
In January not even you can always find a clear blue sky for your photos, but to my mind dark clouds can also produce attractive pictures. The church and the secular buildings are all very beautiful and the river floats by on a pleasant dagonal. In my opinion a few small details mean a lot to the composition. These are the two persons sitting in the foreground, the two red things on each side of the water, the orange marquee and the chairs of the café. They brighten the grey view and provide a rhythm to the composition.
jacquest (18869) 2014-01-07 3:58
I like the point of view on this bridge and the surrounding buildings. Even with an overcast sky, you were able to have well rendered colors and fine sharpness. I like the two people sitting far apart in front of the canal, like two solitudes.
lousat (81138) 2014-01-07 4:11
pierrefonds (59412) 2014-01-07 4:30
The length of the canal is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the détails, the colors of the architecture of the bridge, og the building and of the St.Michaels Church. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colors. Have a nice day.
danos (89657) 2014-01-07 4:49
very nice the view of this section of the town of Ghent with the St. Michiels to dominating the place with the arch bridge to complete perfect the beautiful postcard.I like the excellent chosen POV as the light and the colour management of the scene.Well done.
timecapturer (49288) 2014-01-07 4:56
Ghent has to be one of the jewels among European cities, with an exquisite architectural heritage. It looks so wonderful in this perfectly executed and composed shot. Stunning place, beautifully captured.
Sergiom (65323) 2014-01-07 5:48
dkmurphys (51541) 2014-01-07 6:32
Lovely pov along the canal. Ghent is a wonderful city where I had a great time.
Enjoy a nice evening.
saxo042 (37602) 2014-01-07 7:15
A very attractive cityscape with these old buildings. I like the uniform and soft colours and the small red items that provide accents in the scene.
ikeharel (61523) 2014-01-07 7:57
Used well the low light prevailed, John, and inspite that there are fine archi.-details shown.
missing a bit warm colors, but winter scenery not always allow more tones included.
The youngsters sit along are fine life added to the whole, and white boat under the bridge is a nice addition.
Cheers, good evening,

a beautiful picture of great architectural interest. The space is defined through a superb arrangement of perspectives, the details and textures are so precise and attractive. You managed light and colours in a marvelous way, without any exaggeration or enhancement. I appreciate very much the naturalness of the colours and the peacefulness of the atmosphere. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

What a beautiful place to go for a stroll. The architecture of the buildings is superb. The point of view is well chosen to show us the canal and that nice bridge.Very nice natural colors.Great sharpness to enjoy the details.Very well done.
aleXundar (1256) 2014-01-07 10:57
A wonderful perspective as usual. Placement of the bridge and the canal is very nice. The tone is also unique. Though the light was not exactly helpful, you have extracted excellent clarity and details of the church. I like the restaurant on the other side of the canal. And of course, the human figures in the fg is a touch of life.
Thanks for sharing a marvelous shot.
With warm regards,

Vele groeten, Paul
dekanski (3916) 2014-01-07 13:49
I can feel the atmosphere of that day - near the bridge and the church!
carlo62 (37318) 2014-01-07 15:53
macjake (60030) 2014-01-07 15:57
so which city is more photogenic..Brussels or Ghent? :)
Looking at the scene, i like the red box on the left...is that a phone? is it an emergency box?
its the only red color we see.
love the elongated arch too, then there's the smaller arch on the right.
lots of old time charm coming through the screen.
Periko (3355) 2014-01-07 16:08

What an incredible collection of architecture you have captured here! The way you have composed this makes it seem like the bridge is part of the church and makes it so much more impressive and seems to spread out throughout the scene. The people in the scene give great scale too, and the church is really huge! The sky in the background is a perfect canvass on which to present these beautiful buildings, and one thing that grabs my eye is the orange awning on the right hand corner. Beautiful place and capture,
All the best
krzychu30 (15510) 2014-01-08 1:36

I like frame and composition.
I like it.

abmdsudi (45706) 2014-01-09 8:21
Despite the grey weather condition you are still able to register mass of detail in the building architecture, indeed a charming town by the canal pleasantly composed in this layout. Speck of vivid colours is nice breaker to the muted tones and people presence liven the shot. Beautiful mood I think you have a stronger composition. Excellent capture and tfs.
John_F_Kennedy (43353) 2014-01-09 8:41
Very attractive shot of the bridge with the building. Very good point of view. I like the details on your picture.
Romano46 (18472) 2014-01-09 8:51

Heel mooi gedaan, John.
kato (11630) 2014-01-09 19:45
You're capturing well this place by a good angle and so excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see St Michael's Church with beautiful Gothic style and this gentle canal. Two people in this side looks like this atmosphere. And, it's also elegant for the bridge.
mcmtanyel (15625) 2014-01-09 20:45
I like the way the two people are positioned, they are well balanced. A very pleasant place rendered by a very high quality photo.

clic (15782) 2014-01-10 7:53
Bad weather does not interfere with the picture quality; you show with excellent details the fine 'Brug' architecture that adds a romantic touch to the historic district, seen in the XV century by means of the 'time machine' because no important modern artifacts are seen!
rychem (26834) 2014-01-10 8:34

excellent composition and great details

picture is very nice and very well done. Friends all told you. Superb POV and composition. Nice place in Gandawa.
Have a nice WE and good health.
Buin (42360) 2014-01-11 1:20
Here you show us a truly beautiful ensemble of buildings - one more interesting than the other. I also like the calm atmosphere - without masses of tourists. These orange signposts and the canvas blind are nice additional eyecatchers in the picture. Is this Schelde or Leie in foreground? The slight diagonal of the river adds some dynamism into the composition.
Thank you for the informative note!
Greetings from still springlike Siegen - however, with -1°C this morning!
mkamionka (32017) 2014-01-11 14:52
the weather was obviously very challenging with the sky having just subtle features but you did a fantastic job with the exposure and processing. The place is of course beautiful but what I find interesting here is this very natural feeling. I am always afraid to show photos from days like this but this is all true, all natural colors of this place.
jcpix (13726) 2014-01-11 20:42
Perhaps no sun and cool temperatures, but it sure doesn't dampen the beauty and atmosphere of this place. It would appear that the young lady on the right has caught your actions. There really isn't a bad place to take a picture in this town, is there? Even for places we've seen before, a slightly different angle of point of view produces even more magic. Although we generally all prefer a blue sky, I like what this overcast situation does to associate the time of year, and it actually makes for some decent contrast with the architecture. Beautiful as always, don't ever hesitate to post more from here! :)
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
mirosu (15126) 2014-01-16 1:57
Superb view of the fabulous church and the stone bridge in front, well arranged in landscape format. Even though that the light was not very friendly, the result is perfect. Well done.
josepmarin (57841) 2014-01-16 3:35
your efficient framing allows us to enjoy the wonderful architecture of the church, of the houses and of the bridge, under a weak light of a cloudy and maybe rainy day.
In spite of this poor light, the colours have a great quality, and the image is very sharp.
I like both young people in foreground, providing a nice vital touch into the composition.
A good work, my friend.
adramad (39770) 2014-01-16 11:01
Great POV capturing this corner, so wonderful in this special city, perfect bind in the same picture, the splendid church, with the charm of the bridge, the channel and the two houses so charming facades city.
Despite the gray day, very good color.
The brightness and sharpness are also perfect.
Have a good night.

Angshu (56460) 2014-01-19 22:50
Even on a greay date the strngth of the marvellous architecture makes this picture a treat to watch. The church almost fills the frame and the beautiful bridge looks good as well. The two people in the FG animate the scene well. Good work!
siudzi (34131) 2014-01-19 23:00
This is very elegant and classy look at this beautiful old architecture. Both the bridge and the church built a charming winter scene -- very moody one! Perfectly executed and nicely observed. TFS!

Many years ago I crossed that bridge John, I like Bruges very much, the Venice of Belgium. A good perspective and scale with the people, you've taken the best from a dull day. I know you don't like it, but this would make a fine B&W image.....:)

John, yes I live in the countryside by the lake, nature is beautiful around here but it does not have the elegance and the picturesque sceneries of your country!!
one more of your extraordinary pictures even in a cloudy day!!
