Five days ago I make a bike trip to Bruges, a very lovely springtime day with almost twenty degree Celsius.
During my passage at the "Kruispoort" in Dutch " I saw the old fortress with in background the old mills on the dyke along the canal.
Excellent for a picture, I departs never without camera.
Almost fifty kilometre together, a good workout at my age.
I hope you enjoy of these picture.
The Cross gate was a town gate part of the second town wall of Bruges dating from 1297. The actual gate is of more recent date .
It is dated form the beginning of the 15 th century. It was built by the architects Jan van Oudenaerde and Maarten van Leuven.
Today there is only the main building remaining, while the two bridges and the front gate have another view.
At the side of the water there are two towers, that are connected with a machicolation, with a throw hole to be able to attack the enemy with bullets.
The pointed arched passage could be closed with two doors, a hers and a drawbridge. Nearby there is a small pedestrian passage, reachable via a small bridge, secured by an embrace.
On the town side the facade looks less like a fortress. On the corners there are two octagonal turrets.
In between the façade is divided in two floors with a dripstone moulding, and there above an out leaning breastwork.
There are four windows with cross-bar frames in round arched niches, that are decorated with tracery in the three lobbed arches . There is a tabernacle with crucifix in the middle above the passage.
Most of the interior has been preserved. We can find the five parted vaults back in the two defence towers.
The sittings for the gate guards were saved on the different floors.
The top room is separated into three aisles with columns, that are support the cross-rib vaulting’s.
Some consoles have little angels with a banderols.
At night the town gate is illuminated.

Good Morning John,
You certainly cycled a long way to see this most interesting building. You always have to remember that when you cycle somewhere, you still have the same distance to cycle back!
The big, cylindrical towers make a strong feature, especially with the flags flying above them and the red bridge leading towards them. I like how you have concentrated on their textural surfaces as well as their shape.
I'm glad you mentioned the mill in your notes. I didn't notice it immediately, as it was partly hidden by the tree and it would have been a loss not to have seen it, for once you know it is there, it becomes a second focal point.
Have a lovely day,

jurek1951 (42196) 2014-03-24 1:42
a beautiful photo of this elegant architecture, the composition is very nice, great lights and details, splendid shot,
Subhogen (4067) 2014-03-24 1:46
Beautiful view of the old fortress. The cylindrical towers are the most attractive feature of this impressive building. Nice detailing on the fort wall despite the distance. The windmills sticking out of those barren trees make for a nice BG for the fort. The red draw bridge and those fluttering flags add spots of bright colour to the composition. Good shot with nice light natural colours and excellent clarity as usual. Thanks for sharing.
jacquest (18927) 2014-03-24 2:41
You certainly chose a good day for a bike trip and the light was just superb as I can see in this inage of great quality. Your point of view gives a good perspective on this architecture and the framing with the trees and he windmill is well done.
Apurba20 (984) 2014-03-24 2:41
Love the soft color of the fortress. The water adds its own bit of serenity to the surrounding.
sandpiper (6788) 2014-03-24 2:42
sounds like you had a great day out. Fine view of this fortress with the windmills in the background. good composition.
chrislo (4155) 2014-03-24 2:51

how did I miss this amazing fortress on my trips to Bruges? It looks magnificent here and we get a superb idea of its setting and imposition. Perfect clarity and detail in this beautiful image.
Have a good week - B.

Ciao e buona settimana

Excellent view to beautiful castle in superb light & clarity. I like the arrangement with water in foreground and the windmill in BG. Excellent light and color contrast.
Very well done.
snunney (94885) 2014-03-24 4:08
This entrance fortress is very impressive indeed and obvious well maintained to this day. I like how you have framed the shot with the inclusion of the windmill whilst the bridge sweeps in from the right. A pleasantly lit image with agreeable warm tones and very good clarity.
pierrefonds (63330) 2014-03-24 4:19
The length of the canal is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and the colours of the old fortress. The good luminosity is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

well,it would be frustrating to be on route and to see interesting things for photographing and the camera lies in the cupboard at home...
and that is really an interesting motive, impressive arcitectural details,
well captured and composed,
thanks for sharing,
Kamilutka (8105) 2014-03-24 4:54
indeed it is handy to have a camera during bike trips and obviously it was worth it also this time. The weather seems to have been typical springtime and the light made the colors of this picture more defined.
Interesting architecture in the foreground but even more eye catching windmills have been placed in the background- well captured!
Thanks for sharing

ourania (41234) 2014-03-24 8:56
a very charming picture, a graceful composition. It's great how the imposing building has nestled in the bottom left corner on the frame, a curving perspective leading to it. There's an elegant diagonal that divides the frame in terms of interest and colour, I like how the view of the Gate and its surroundings has bright colours and lots of textures while the large part left to the sky is so smooth and relaxing. Depth and sharpness are superb, all the details are essential. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
saxo042 (37792) 2014-03-24 12:18
A good picture and an interesting gate. This construction is quite easy to find on the Google map and watch their street view from this very same angle. I notice that you had much better weather when you took this fine picture than what Google had.

This is a very impressive gate. It would not have been easy to get inside the city uninvited through this massive fortress. Its rounded shapes and ochra colour make it very attractive to watch, especially in the warm light on this sunny day. The windmill on the green hill is another very appealing view from this spot.
shreya2000 (2131) 2014-03-25 3:23
A nic pic of nice architecture. I like the colours and the angle of the pic. Thanks for sharing.
adramad (43115) 2014-03-25 9:20
Fantastic composition, this powerful fortress with these sturdy round towers, its location next to the canal and bridge access, make really lovely, we see the windmills on the dike add a charming touch to the image.
Nice color, in these natural tones.
Also both sharpness, such as lighting are great.
Well taken photo. I Like
Enjoy a nice day.

Good frame and super colors.
PaulVDV (26682) 2014-03-25 13:31
Vele groeten, Paul

kato (11630) 2014-03-25 21:24
You're capturing well this place by a good composition and very excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the calm canal, small red bridge and old fortress with round shape on the dyke along the canal. It's elegant and beautiful architecture. And, it's also tasteful for windmill in back. So, here looks like a peaceful place remaining the medieval atmosphere.
subhendu_bagchi (26083) 2014-03-26 1:32
those architectures are really eye catching and you presented it really great using a nice angle. Excellent depth and colour depth as always. Great presentation with warm light. Excellent one. Tfs.

photoray (13725) 2014-03-26 15:33
Attractive historical entry into Bruges, bridge crossing the canal, and the enormous gothic gate architecture still in fine condition considering its age, and a bonus with a glimpse of windmills in the background.
Thanks for sharing,
jcpix (13846) 2014-03-26 19:25
Your note made me smile, and explains nicely why you are so successful...never leave home without the camera! :) A beautiful and formidable entrance to this fortress. Unlike any that I've seen before, the large cylindrical bases are quite interesting in the overall architecture. Just enough of a breeze it would appear, you were able to capture that flags flying, giving the idea of motion and a hint of Spring. Love the windmill off to the side, quite a contrast of structures. The red railing on the bridge is a nice dash of color against the neutral tones of the fortress and blue skies above. Keep up those bike rides, they benefit all of us! :) Have a great day ahead. All the best.
mcmtanyel (19701) 2014-03-26 21:11
A very charming castle basking in the afternoon sun. The distant mill is interesting, too.
Corry (4508) 2014-03-27 5:08
Note intéressante. Bien fait.
williewhistler (16193) 2014-03-27 5:16
you have taken full advantage of a lovely light to compose a very attractive view of the old fortress with flags unfurled.
The sight of the iconic windmills add their own charm and interest in the BG.
Well worth the effort that you have extended I would say.
Kind regards Les.
Graal (101714) 2014-03-27 9:43
nice composition here and fine POV you had. Interesting walls of fortress on FG. Also nice mills in BG. Good light and colors. Very well done photo.
Have a nice evening.
ChrisJ (109532) 2014-03-27 14:33
Good sharpness and a nice warm cold color contrast between the yellow buff walls of the stone watchtowers and the blue sky. The red striped flags and red railed bridge contrast well against the blue sky and the rippled reflections in the water add interest. Tfs!

Impressive two big cylindrical towers, keeping safe passage for the gate crossing, John.
Besides the fortified gate, the windmills and canal in view, are areal complementaries on photo.
A fine scene on a bight day.
Have a nice Friday,

very interesting the cylindrical shapes of this castle, nice sample of architecture. I liked the other details of the place like the mills ahead. nice light and framing. TFS.
mkamionka (34609) 2014-03-28 6:36
it seems that spring has already arrived over there! Beautiful presentation of this interesting town gate. Although Bruges is so famous I don't remember anyone showing this gate before and it has a very unique shape. From this angle across the water it looks indeed like the entrance to a medieval castle. Windmills behind add a nice touch as well. It seems to be a pleasant day but I see the flags are spread by the wind so it must be quite windy.
I wish you a very warm and pleasant weekend,
UlfE (14641) 2014-03-28 12:00
A really fine spring scene. This old town gate reminds a litte bit of castles in Sweden from more or less the same time. Your perspective was excellent and have resulted in a really fine composition. The inclusion of the windmill is great. TFS and have a nice weekend!

Lovely compo as the strong prominent subjects draw attention together with the waterways lined by some rich colors with blue sky. This is great full of interest nicely framed in great perspective and depth. Wonderful scenic spot nicely shot, Congrats
Buin (42420) 2014-03-30 9:51
John, this is a really impressive structure. The contrast between this massive gate - nearly a fortress - and the "gracile" windmills is stunning.
An interesting and for sure worth visiting place. A really daunting architecture - from an aggressoers point of view ;-)
All the best!
irek1 (853) 2014-03-31 3:41

Your always engaging notes augment this excellent photos you submit. This image of the old fortress in Bruges accompanied by a highly informative note is no exception. You are brave to ride your bicycle 50 km, but I also remember the terrible bicycle accident you had a few years ago.
My desktop computer, an iMac, died 2-3 weeks ago. I had the Photoshop application on that machine, and I cannot convert the photos I shot in RAW into jpg format. However, soon a new iMac will take the place of the old one.
Warm regards my friend,
clic (16622) 2014-04-08 7:03
I consider there are two eye-catchers across the border; the fortified rounded building, and the distant iconic windmill that, with its partially- hidden twin, composes a nice visual balance to this historic scenery masterly captured.
Angshu (56748) 2014-04-14 5:38
This is so very Vlaanderen...the castle, the moat, the windmill. You have composed this very well in good light. The mild breeze creates small ripples in the water. Very nice work!
