The Cloth Hall (Dutch: Lakenhal) in Ypres (Dutch: Ieper) was one of the largest commercial buildings of the Middle Ages, when it served as the main market and warehouse for the Flemish city's prosperous cloth industry.
The original structure, erected mainly in the 13th century and completed 1304, lay in ruins after artillery fire devastated Ypres in World War I. Between 1933 and 1967, the hall was meticulously reconstructed to its prewar condition.
The Lakenhalle now houses the In Flanders Fields Museum.
In the centinary of the outbreak of the Great War, the 'Westhoek' area of Flanders is sure to draw large crowds of "commemoration tourists".
Attitude towards them is a bit ambiguous. Yes, it's important to commemorate, but the commercial aspect of it all has raised quite a few eyebrows. Particularly the reinactment thing (i.e. grown-ups playing soldier) is very much under fire.

The town near to where I live used to have a wonderful cloth hall but, it was found to be surplus to requirements, was demolished not long after the war. What a tragedy! Nowadays, it would have been protected and revered.
This is a beautiful building, even if refurbished. I like the repeating windows and decorations. I am amazed at its size. Your viewpoint and inclusion of figures has clearly defined its scale.
My arm regards,

Hello Benny ,
On nous présente fréquemment les villes de Gand , Anvers ou Brugges , mais il semble que Ypres n'ait rien à leur envier . Une architecture magnifique superbement mise en image .

you are presenting very impressing architecture and the note accompanying is interesting too. The quality of the picture is absolutely great in terms of colors, sharpness and given contrast. The composition is classic and well planned and the chosen POV allows proper relations among all the main elements of the picture.

The composition is great including several elements surrounding the imposing building, Detail and colour are simply glorious, and there is plenty to capture viewer's attention without distraction and so well balanced and presence of people add an interesting foreground. Its subtly exposed in brilliant light with superb overall contrast. A painstaking effort so well rewarded. Wonderful full of life shot, Congrats.

Do not know Ypres but it looks like it's well worth the trip from Eastern France
As much as Bruges, Anvers, Ghent or Bruxelles !? An idea for a future destination
Well composed and luminous image
Bravo, have a nice evening

hello benny, Amazing architecture from Belgium. They knew how to build shopping centers in Middle Ages. The house far right with so many windows in the roof looks also very beautiful. Excellent presentation.

Heel mooi foto werk, bedankt.

Goed werk.

Impressive medieval building for its length and arches upon arches architecture, and obviously repaired back to working condition. Would enjoy visiting the museum someday and the other historical architecture seen beyond.
thanks for sharing,
