The last week got we two days better weather, I found these photo along Napoleon canal in the rural village of Hoeke, 8 km of the Belgian coast, 500m of the Netherlands borders..
The shepherd with his sheep and dogs, this is for me always a pleasant moment for take a picture of these peaceful group to make.
These narrow road is forbidden for car, alone fisherman come here with the car.
Every day during summer come here maybe thousand bikers, almost all that make a trip between Bruges and Sluis, real a recommended for bikers.
You can regular stopping, for drinking a cup of coffee, or maybe a good fresh beer.
Thanks for you visit.
Sheep in Flanders:
Land maintained with small ruminants: a cheaper alternative
The sheep focused on lamb production is rarely profitable in Flanders: the grounds are very expensive and other intensive exploitation possibilities are therefore often more interesting.
In Flanders, however, many public and private areas that require maintenance. Think of parks, industrial areas, dikes ... Moreover, there are quite a few natural recovered to be maintained. Mechanical maintenance with its own staff or through contract work is an expensive solution. Deployment of small ruminants may be a good alternative.
Landscape with sheep in the Netherlands has been in recent years a firm foothold. In Flanders growing interest slowly. Both for the land manager and for the farmer, there are many practical questions about this new form of sheep. The project "Landscape management with sheep 'had intended to gather information and as many answers.

Good Morning John,
This is the sort of scene that would happen in the rural areas of England, when I was much younger. Now, it is a rarity. It is very fortunate that cars are banned from the road, but what a useful way of cropping the roadside grass.
It is a scene that is immediately absorbing because of its interesting elements. The sheep capture immediate attention but, then, the roads acts as a good lead, we follow the direction of the cyclists and notice the repeating verticals of the nicely textured trees.
Yes, the good light makes a great change and is inspirational to photographers.
Have a lovely day,
krzychu30 (14442) 2013-06-03 1:56
this scene has really nice feeling. There is no haste, stress or daily life rush. It´s kind of relaxing and pleasant to watch the scene and the rural life outside town.
The image is well composed and has excellent sharpness, clarity as well as lovely,well-saturated colors.
Have a nice day

A pleasant rustic scene captured under an agreeable light. I like the point of view, making good use of the road to create perspective, and the animated atmosphere. A well presented image with very good colours and sharpness.
pierrefonds (52642) 2013-06-03 4:14
The length of the road is giving depth and perspective to the composition. The presence of the shepperd and his sheep is adding life to the scene. The threes are framing well the canal. The good luminosity is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Brillant picture Aleksander,
that picture shows the contrast between an ancient job and modernity
Excellent view of this shepherd with his sheeps helped by a specialised dog

You are the master of depth, and once again, we have a wonderful scene that allows to step right in and soak up the atmosphere! The contrast of the darker wooded area and its woolly occupants, and the bright light of the road is brilliantly seen!
All the best
Zucca (4610) 2013-06-03 8:51
Nice scene, with good natural colors ; the road followed by cyclers and the trees are well placed, two worlds are met together, people's one on the one hand and sheeps' one one the other hand. The temperature seems to be cold, yet...
Have a nice evening,

Bonjour, cher ami John,
Nice repetition of the sheep and the sheepdog is a bonus. Good sharpness with superb textural details in the ribbed bark of the tree. The road at left adds good lead in lines and linear perspective with vanishing point. Have a nice week!
ourania (21538) 2013-06-04 11:43
a very fine composition that shows us very much about this place, what its prominent characteristics are and how people relate to it. I like very much the firmness of the tree trunks and the deep and clear view on either side of them. The light is very pleasant and the natural colours are vivid and agreeable. It's nice how the shepherd and his dog have stopped to watch the cyclists bringing a sense of connection. The perspective of the road works superbly too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Buin (42224) 2013-06-04 12:12
What a wonderful and nearly touching rural scene. The sidelight makes it a nearly 3D scene and the rows of trees along the canal provide an amazing depth. I like especially the rendering of the trees' bark in foreground. A photo to look at on a grey and cold November day ...
Greetings from at last a bit warmer Westphalia, also with some sunshine!
Hansaphotos (6255) 2013-06-04 13:32
A fine rural scene you`ve captured here. It must be a delightful area for bikers, and you have captured a couple of them as well. Together with this lovely, peaceful scene we get a long perspective along the bicycle path; beautiful:) TFS. Have a nice week.
mcmtanyel (7384) 2013-06-04 17:03
This is very cute. It's a great idea, too. Maybe we should keep shhep in our backyard instead of paying for gas to mow the lawn.
I also like the perspective provided by the road and the lines of trees.
Urs (14082) 2013-06-04 21:01
I like these sheep very much, they just need grass and water. Fine colour hues and sharpness. Well donee
Yes I knows that I cut off the feeds of my elderly women I photographed in Vientiane, but it was a candid action shot, where I had to be double fast then usual.
clic (13006) 2013-06-05 7:10
Before the lawnmower invention, sheeps were the more-efficient ecological harvesters, while spending "green" fertilizer!
I wonder wich of dogs or shepherd has more authoritativeness to guide sheeps in designated pasture lands!
Thanks for this serene view of Hoeke captured with great finery.
mkamionka (28041) 2013-06-05 7:25
lovely scene here. The presence of sheep adds so much charm. The trees aligned in two rows make also an interesting visually effect.
Very well done,
williewhistler (10927) 2013-06-05 12:02
Hello John, with the shepherd and his dog controlling the grazing sheep and the cyclists passing gently by this appears to be a very peaceful rural scene.
A most charming bucolic image.
bukitgolfb301 (33540) 2013-06-05 16:47
Hi dear John
Natural, casual and heartwarming image indeed.
As always stunning sharp and clear image indeed.
From front to rear outstnadingly clear, incredible for me. Greatest shot as usal!
Thanks for your sharing with your finest work and have a good day!
jcpix (8402) 2013-06-05 20:33
My, that dog looks to be as big as a few of those sheep!? :) Can't go wrong with a daily life scene, and this one is a real beauty...featuring the many sides of nature. What a great look at the working life of a shepherd and his flock, mixed right in with the rural side of life as people ride by on their bikes enjoying a sun filled afternoon. Beautiful composition, I like the unbalanced arrangement because it shows so much of each aspect taking place in harmony. A lovely moment captured, thanks for sharing it with us. Have a great day ahead.
All the best,

Hi John. Sheep in May. What a beautiful and pleasing photo. These photos show the beauty of nature and the simple life. Well seen and presented.
ikeharel (47056) 2013-06-06 0:26
good morning John,
It is always amazing to see how the shapered-dog keep the herd of sheeps in tight area. Marvelous green spring, light and DOF on trees along the canal's.
raszid62 (18583) 2013-06-06 10:01
Very nice view - grazing sheep on the road, a young shepherd and his dog. and by two cyclists on the tour. The picture is very nice and in a great quality and color.
abmdsudi (35410) 2013-06-06 10:03
An idyllic rural scene so very well captured in gorgeous colours and lighting. Really like this, especially the flocks which dominate the fg in wonderful detail and contrasting so superbly against the setting. A peaceful looking landscape so well shot in such a great depth. Another delightful shot, Congrats. TFS

mjw364 (6282) 2013-06-07 8:44
Interesting shot this because it is so unusual to find sheep grazing alongside a canal! The dog looks more interested in chasing the cyclists than the sheep!
Nice scene from daily life.
photoray (7988) 2013-06-07 17:01
A fine vision of a Flanders "Appian Way", for the shepherd, deep green grass, pathway, parallel trees, all leading the eye into the distance.
Nicely composed and created,
tyro (16792) 2013-06-07 17:06
An interesting note about this place which sounds so very accessible to cyclists like yourself and which appears to give many opportunities for some fine photographs like this too.
You have caught this scene perfectly - the shepherd and his faithful dog controlling the sheep which are happily eating the fresh spring grass while a couple of cyclists disappear down the road into the distance past the long row of tall trees.
Lovely lighting and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
kato (10603) 2013-06-08 6:50
You're capturing well this rural scene bya good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see a lot of sheeps gathering around the green at the side of a road and the sequence of the tree with the thick trunk which is standing on the both sides of a road. It's impressive in a shepherd and a dog controlling the sheep, too. The whole is harmonized well by a good attangement and excellent color combination. Very pastoral photograph!
Didi (52509) 2013-06-08 8:53
macjake (48401) 2013-06-09 12:35
always a pleasure to re-visit your gallery to see whats new.
This isn't a common scene here in Canada, so its nice to see it in Belgium :)
and I don't blame you at all, as its a scene that lightens the mood and softens the heart.
so delightful to see the sheep and dog together in harmony, or at least mostly harmony.
nice photo all around

A totally wonderful pastoral scene, this trail is a delight for a long walk as the two riders are doing, charming foreground with the flock of sheep and a fabulous image perspective, perfect textures of these tree trunks first plane.
Good handling of brightness and optimal sharpness.
Very well done. I love the light and color.
I wish you a happy start to the week.
Graal (93634) 2013-06-11 23:58
good shot and presentation this peaceful scene. Friends all told for you. I like this picture also, is well done.
Have a nice day.
holmertz (33585) 2013-06-13 3:12
The long lines of trees, the road and the glimpse of the canal give this view a very fine depth. The foreground is very pleasant to watch. For the moment the dog doesn't have a difficult job, while the sheep are grazing quietly, but it is clearly on high alert for anything that could disturb the peace (such as photographers coming too close).
A very nice photo with good light and fine colours of early summer.
maloutim (9619) 2013-06-14 17:14
A very interesting post indeed !
I love the peaceful character of the photograph, with the sheep grazing the grass alongside the road, guarded by a very watchful dog. He seems to be wary of these bikers in case they were intruders on his flock !
So it's a job for a person, as the sheep cannot be left alone of course ! But it's a very good idea to keep the grass short along the roads !
I notice the name of the canal ! I suppose it was built by Napoleon then ? I know he had a lot of road sides planted with trees, in order to keep his armies in the shade, while they were marching ! A lot of these tree-lined roads still exist nowadays !
Lovely composition according to your favourite diagonals !
Great management of light, colours and details.

It does look like a very nice place to ride a bike, I wish we have that kind of countryside in Southern Nevada to ride bike on. Nice capture of this beautiful country scene with sheeps on the roadside for added attraction. Good details. Very well done, tfs.

very beautiful image with the animals with the modern shepherd . the lines of these trunks and the canal are very well positioned. I liked the special mood. perfect job. TF.
Angshu (53681) 2013-06-16 22:56
This is a fine picture which shows a different 'perspective' in your shots. Not only do we have the perspective created by the trees, but also the scene is animated by the sheep and the cyclists. Good work!
branley (3681) 2013-06-17 5:36
A lovely shot with lots going on, the shepherd, the sheep eating, the cyclists and the dog overseeing everything. Lovely perspective, good depth and fine colours. A great image John.

Hello, John, good evening!
Funny scene for me, you are right, it was really pleasant moment. I look to the dog. I think he thinks of himself a chief for these stupid sheeps ))) Very nice photo, unusual presentation of rural scene.
Best wishes from hot Ural town!
bona (11865) 2013-06-18 12:40
what a pretty view. I like the many sheeps here and the dogs (Border Colies) taking care of them. Is it very commong pathways of streets with many trees side bi side in Belgian? I saw this kind of view many times in your photos and I really like that.
elenimavrandoni (11173) 2013-06-21 4:15
Hello John, thank you for your welcome..I missed your beautiful pictures too..this one such a marvelous scenery in the country...simply beautiful!

I like your rural scene presented here. Sheep that eat and are guarded by the shepherd and dog form a captivating scene. Good idea!
limielski (2577) 2013-06-23 5:36
Beautiful picture. One can see sheeps not very often today. It's rare view.
A sharpness is excellent, colours are very natural and the shot is well composed.
I probably mentioned (in my previous post) that my father lived in Belgium twenty years (town Morlanwelz) , so I feel a bond of sympathy to your photos :-)
Best regards, Leszek

a vital and dynamic scene caught here, the sheeps under control of the shepherd and the dog, the bikers, and the deep perspective of the trees and of the canal, create a nice composition, with a fantastic light and beautiful colours.
A good work, my friend.
daddo (21288) 2013-07-11 2:35
Hi John. I never, never expected to see such an image from your part of the world. It makes me happy to know that shepherds still exist and your note also tells me that he and his sheep will not have too many problems with cars. I like how the dog is waiting for further instructions. Lovely natural light and details. Best wishes. Klaudio.
