Bruges en peinture, a photo from West-Vlaanderen, Flanders

Photographer's Note

Bruges (en flamand Brugge) est une ville de Belgique, en Flandre occidentale; à 100 kilomètres de Bruxelles et à 43 kilomètres de la mer du Nord; au point de jonction des canaux de Gand, de l'Écluse et d'Ostende.

Le premier peintre célèbre sur lequel on ait quelques renseignements est Jean ou Hennequin de Bruges. On ne sait à peu près rien de sa vie, mais on connaît ses oeuvres. Il vécut à la cour de France. Il fut peintre et valet de chambre de Charles V, et orna de miniatures une Bible datée de 1372, qui est au musée Westreenianum à La Haye, et où se voit en tête un remarquable portrait de Charles V, souvent reproduit. Il composa également pour la duc d'Anjou, en 1376, les cartons des fameuses Tapisseries de l'Apocalypse, exécutées ensuite par Nicolas Bataille, Parisien, et que possède la cathédrale d'Angers. Mais le vrai fondateur de l'école, qui figure fréquemment dans les textes sous le nom de Jean de Bruges, c'est Jean Van Eyck, le grand peintre du XVe siècle. Il y résida quelques mois, après son entrée au service du duc de Bourgogne, Philippe le Bon (mai-juin 1425), et s'y installa définitivement au retour de sa mission au Portugal (1431), pour ne plus quitter désormais la ville jusqu'à sa mort (9 juillet 1440). Il y fut enterré et y a laissé quelques-uns de ses chefs-d'oeuvre, entre autres la Vierge faite pour le chanoine van der Paele (1436), et le portrait de sa femme (1439).

Tu as peut-être sauté les 366 marches , mais tu n'as pas raté ton coup. La peinture est tellement réaliste que cela ressemble à une photo. Très bien fait.

Bonjour Christiane,

A picture of a picture!.
This is lovely and very well composed, with the artist strongly positioned off-centre, whilst the angled painting makes a natural lead into the shot.
It is crisp, clear and well saturated.

Funnily enough, when we visited Bruges, I bought a picture from an artist who was painting one of the canal scenes; not as big as this one!

Bonjour Christiane,
En nous faisant partager la vision de l’artiste, tu nous offres ici une copie tellement conforme à la réalité qu’il n’était pas nécessaire de montrer le paysage original que cet homme a fidèlement reproduit sur sa toile. Bruges restera encore longtemps pour de nombreux peintres une magnifique source d’inspiration. Belle précision du geste capté dans l’instant, la touche finale sans doute.

Wow, that is a paiting. Very realistic painter he is. Not the like of Van Gho or other impressionistic style painter. It is like a photograph. You could have just took the picture of the painting and I would think it is real.
