Three weeks ago I was in Bruges, then we got a lot snow in Belgium and also Flanders, I took these picture during the afternoon during a stroll through this Beguinage.
A wonderful and peaceful place for a good stroll and also for photographers.
Every year come here thousands of visitors, toward these peacefully place where a lot peoples out of Japan and other parts of the world
Just behind the Minnewater lies the Beguinage 'De Wijngaard' (= the Vineyard). It is one of those typical areas in Bruges where one can find more peace and quiet than in the sometimes busy and overcrowded streets of the town center. The Beguinage is a group of houses around a little garden covered with large poplar trees. It was here that during the last seven centuries lived the beguines of Bruges. In 1937 the beguinage became a monastery for the Benedictine sisters who still live here now.
The Beguinage of Bruges was founded in 1245 by the Countess of Flanders, Margaretha of Constantinopel, daughter of Count Baldwin who conquered Constantinopel (now Istambul) during the crusades. In 1299, Philip the beautiful of France, placed the Beguinage under his own rule, thereby withdrawing it from the influence of the town magistrate.Visitors enter the place via a bridge over the canal. The entrance gate bears the date 1776. A lot of houses, however, are much older than that. Most date from the 17th and 18th century. Some houses were built in the 19th century in neo-gothic style. In the southern part is a little dead end street where still some houses of the 15th-16th century can be found. The largest and most impressive house is situated in the left corner behind the garden. It was here that the 'grootjuffrouw', or 'grand-dame' lived. It was she who ruled over the beguinage. The original church of the 13th century was destroyed by a fire in 1584. It was rebuild in 1609 and later again renovated in late baroque style.
I hope you enjoy.

Hi John. The park in winter. I think I've ever seen this scene in a different context. The photo has a strong graphic component. Also interesting is the accompanying text. Well done. Regards, Wolfgang.

snunney (100062) 2010-01-20 1:24
The figure, a nun perhaps, trudging through the snow contributes much to the mood in this fine composition. I like the light and the long shadows cast by the trees. Very good colours and sharpness.
raszid62 (18515) 2010-01-20 1:39
Beautiful Winter Park, as you can see the footsteps in the snow, often frequented. Cool the building in the background, the lady in black with a white scarf is probably a nun. The colors and sharpness excellent.
fabianoleite (11695) 2010-01-20 4:05
Very good, the vast white floor was well highlighted, and the inclusion of the person on that position was very strategic. Excellent composition, congratulations!

Longroute (19396) 2010-01-20 8:13
An excellent composition in your best tradition and a very brilliant photo, so full of light. Both the trees and the houses in the bg give a very high graphic effect and the snow makes the image really very fine.
It's really hard to write a good and original comment to your photos, because one is bound to repeat what already said before... (:-)

Another attractive shot of yours from this place. You have controlled the light and colour balance well, resulting in very natural snow in both light and shadows. Good colours in general, excellent sharpness and a pleasant tranquil atmosphere. TFS!

This is a beautiful winter mood capturing the light really well in the frame. The lone walker adds interest in the frame. I like the framing and how you have metered the exposure.
Thanks for sharing and best regards.

Bonjour, mon cher ami John,
pierrefonds (66889) 2010-01-21 4:52
The presence of the person is adding life to the picture. The trees are framing well the buildings. THe path is taking my eyes toward the buildings which is giving depth to the composition. The reflection of the light on the snow has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.
ChrisJ (114657) 2010-01-21 4:57
A superb winter shot, with excellent sharpness & framing. Have you been successful in logging into the new TE today? I cannot, because I only have a hotmail account. I've forgotten my optus email address, which was cancelled several years ago anyway. Perhaps you could advise Steph?
Otherwise I need to create a new yahoo account. Cheers!
belido (19934) 2010-01-21 5:27
another great composition. At this time the walkin person steals the scene but there are other good elements to see such as the trees and the beautiful architecture in the background. This is nicely done, my friend!
bona (13737) 2010-01-21 5:36
I agree it really looks a ncie place foro stroll and photographies. But the cold could be a problem.
I like the woman walking there and the nice blue sky.
supi4u (599) 2010-01-21 5:39
Another wonderful composed winter picture from ur side . Specially I like the color composition mainly in 2 color black & white though it is a color picture. Nice detailing and very sharp image a good note too. Well done.
Dyerco (10185) 2010-01-21 6:52
A well composed shot with the nun nicely placed in the scene. Lovely soft winter light on the trees.
xuaxo (6846) 2010-01-21 8:16
Very interesting to see the Beguinage under snow. I guess it is not usual.
I like to see the dark trees over the white landscape.
The end of the note have that "< / font >" problem that make the critiques be in small size.
The replies are not visible now in TE.

Good morning John,
lovely this Winter scenery with the lonely woman to stroll like you in the snowy ground.I like the trunks of the trees as create a wonderful and textured environment. The building on the foreground 'close' pleasantly the scene.
Have a nice and warm day,Danos
Cretense (68703) 2010-01-22 0:53
Beautiful blending of nature and architecture, great daily life scene on a white "carpet"! Great composition and framing, excellent light management (something not so easy when snow is involved), beautiful colours! Congratulations!
rikko77 (10861) 2010-01-22 3:11

The photo has a strong graphic component.
Very good colours and sharpness.
josepmarin (58359) 2010-01-22 9:52
I like the long shades that the low light of the evening projects on this park, and the graphism that the trees provide in this image.
The person is a good reference to see the dimensions of the park.
It is a very nice photo to look at, due to its great luminosity and its interesting elements.
Well done, my friend.
Fis2 (98577) 2010-01-22 11:05
A very curious place.
Good composition and POV.
I like light and shadows.
The nun add savor of photo.
Have a nice weekend.
pablominto (53746) 2010-01-22 22:21
Interesting to see the snow covered park lawn covered with footprints!
The contrasty tree trunks stands out well in the white surroundings, good repetition effect...
Even in this fine light the snowy landscape appears nearly black and white..!
Bluejeans (64251) 2010-01-23 3:14
Ola John ,
subhendu_bagchi (26089) 2010-01-23 3:21
nice presentation of the shot. The snow in FG, trunk of trees in middle and those nice building in back. Pleasant to see. Sunlight from left made this shot so romantic. Great control over light. An excellent composition.
Have a nice weekend.
chinchini (31529) 2010-01-23 3:27
Have a good weekend!
gervaso (14211) 2010-01-23 4:47
A beautiful winter image with these tones of white, and an excellent contrast between the areas in the shadow and under the sun. Wonderful composition! Well done!

Ciao John, fascinating winter view with fantastic trees and lovely buildings, I like a lot insertion of person, splendid light and colors, very well done, ciao Silvio
macjake (68476) 2010-01-23 7:43
What strikes me most about this photo is the rays of warm light entering the frame from the left.
It also hits the buildings on the far right back of the frame.
The tree trunks seem to oddly fit with the white and dark building :) like they were meant to be together.
Have a great weekend John
riclopes (35577) 2010-01-24 7:48
Olá John, wonderful winter scene. Love the graphic background given by the trunks and all this snowed ground full of footprints. Lovely light and best of all, the inclusion of the walking person (seems like a priest). I noticed a snowman in the distance ;-)
have a nice end of weekend,
emilbo (22616) 2010-01-24 7:59
Juntas (7960) 2010-01-25 9:50
Hi John. This is a very beautiful image with the wonderful whires contrasting with the blue sky. Nice colors and great sharpness on the tree branches and the nice buildings. Very well done. BEst regards.

jemaflor (98029) 2010-01-27 12:03
Well composed with this snowy fg , well also the human presence in this cold view, well managed with this lateral light.
ciakgiak (30431) 2010-01-27 12:41
there's always something special in you images, in this one the light and the clarity are superb, but I also like the human presence in right position and the quality of the photo. Splendid the view of the houses through the trees. Congratulations, TFS.
JCG (35129) 2010-01-30 7:29
jmdias (64962) 2010-02-27 2:07
very nice view. I liked the truinks well positioned and creating a nice graphic effect with the houses ahead. interesting the textures and shadows in the foreground. nice job with the light. well done
resat1972 (7576) 2010-03-13 0:40
snowly in a beautiful place. was a very good shot. model was fit to the frame.
PaulVDV (29157) 2010-11-27 14:45
ikeharel (72175) 2013-09-01 5:05
Good afternoon John,
The naked trees mingle nicely with the white snow and white houses.
Morning light and shadows gave a fine skewed rays over the frozen park.
Fine DOF and clarity on a bright winter day.
elenimavrandoni (0) 2013-09-12 20:49
unreal scenery, fabulous realization, magnificent presentation, I call this artwork in every aspect!!
my compliments John!!
ourania (46288) 2013-10-02 9:11
I like very much this quiet and elegant scene, you've managed to give us a good idea of this place and its atmosphere through a wonderful simple composition. The textured ground is very attractive and the footprints lead us into the frame where we follow and catch up with the lone person. I like how the trees seem to pull the frame upwards. Also, the harmonious lighting and tones -subtly interrupted by a few touches of warmer hues. The clarity is most agreeable and the (lone) snowman in the middle of the frame is a fine detail. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,
PS Thank you very much for your comment on my commemoration photo -as well as for all of your kind comments. I had a look at the link and in some of the pictures I think I recognized your Canal.
abmdsudi (54565) 2014-12-12 18:49
Wonderful fresh warm colourful capture, one of your best shots with the bright buildings framed by the wintery scene and the tree branches add to the effect superbly. It probably still work so well even without the snow and perfectly exposed. The person leads in to the picture. Lovely shot, Congrats
mcmtanyel (23327) 2015-09-02 19:53
All the more power to you for taking photos in the winter. Usually, the cold and wet weather of the winter drives me indoors, in front of my computer, processing the photos I took in the summer and fall.
