This is Ghent on the border of the city, we see three generations from architecture, to the right, the old wall with the windows without glass 15th century,to the left the two towers "Rabot" see history, to the sky, two modern skyscrapers from 1970.
The small river is the Lieve.

The building was erected at the place where the crossed city moat.
The environment was a weak spot in the city defence. In 1488 Maximilian of Austria and made his father used to Ghent to take.
After 40-day siege had the imperial army revive the retreat. Then the city decided to build a reinforcement with two towers which also served as a time lock on the Lieve. Hence the name 'rabot', a corruption of the French rabattre (precipitation), which indicates the lowering of the beams in the water.
The construction works started in 1489 and were terminated in 1491.
The two towers with a wonderful roof truss flank a middle building on the water.
If urban strengthening the Rabot gradually lost its meaning. It was subsequently used as a gunpowder warehouse, ice and building for the innen of urban oktrooi rights.
In 1860 became part of the Rabot scrapped for the passage about the horizon. Recently the building was restored and got a cultural destination.

I want placing a second picture, that you can see the other tower.

I hope you like it.

Hallo John!
A really interesting picture with a lot of details! The contrast is incredible but I think the oldest part is the most beautiful. One nearly can see that time didn't play a big role when these buildings were constructed. Once again, very interesting ... also the added picture!
Greetings from sunny Germany!

Hello John!
I really liked the composition! I love architecture and it was an excellent idea to give us this picture with three generations in architecture so well shown!
Colours, POV and sharpness are very good!
As for my preference, in this case, I just don't like the buildings from the 70's - worldwide they're so ugly!
TFS - Congratulations!
Greetings from Brazil,

Hello John,
A nice combination of the architecture types in a beautiful composition. The swams added great to the view,

Grand merci,

Branko

John,
This is a great shot including these various styles of architecture. Your composition is great using the canal to lead the eye into the shot. The lighting and colors are fine with excellent sharpness and DOF. I am not sure that I don't like the WS shot better than this one!

hi john
is pity to see that buildings erected near the old city,
your photo is a testament to the architects bullshit..

however it is a nice photo properly composed and presented.

Hi John,
You shew beautiful architecture. Excellent strong contrasts between building and blue sky. I like composition, and your POV.

Hi John,

A good way to show history, the architeture from old to modern, the diagonal line of the river leads our eyes toward the modern highrise buildings framed by the old on the left and less old on the right. The reflections in the water are assets to the composition. There is a good contrast between the colors. Have a nice day.

Good choice of shooting angle, John, to present this very contrasting ensemble of different architectural styles. Nice perspective element provided by the canal, and vivid colors enhanced by the good lighting.

Dag John,
a mixture of modern and old houses and the view over the Lieve, the bridge, two swans, a wonderful old red wall and the green from the left. This is a very pleasant view and it has a great brightness and clarity. A well done spring capture. The view of the second with the boat is nice too.

Goedenavond John,

This is an interesting perspective, looking down this stream, with the 3 different eras of architecture on display. The stream itself holds some interest of it's own with the swans and I like the greenery bordering the stream. Colour is very good with good sharp detail.

Thanks, John

Composition is just excellent here, John, your POV allows a comprehensive and harmonious view of this canal, I know the place and you captured these contrasts of architecture well, the two swans add a finishing touch. Very well done!

Dag John.

Hello John! It's always refreshing to see a city with river and flowers/plants. Love the colors and clarity here. Well seen POV as well! rgds.

This is nice composition with great light and clarity. greetings,

Hoi John,

Groetjes, Dennis

Hello Dear John,

A very appropriate title for a photograph and note that spans the centuries. The white swans are a critical element in the effectiveness of the note.

Hallo John,
