History:
In the 18th century Kaprijke knew ( as indeed the whole of Flanders ) a relative peace and prosperity . This changed when it along with the surrounding areas at the end of the 18th century was conquered . Again by the French Kaprijke lost its city charter , but was capital of the canton. Napoleon passed a law that young men have to fight . Required by the French Army When many in the “kleemkapel” of Our Lady invoked pull to be so exempt from military service a good fate , the French also destroyed the chapel .
Around 1830, when Belgium became independent , Kaprijke was primarily geared to agriculture . Yet there was another quarter woodland and heath . Weaving and processing of flax occurred especially in the winter .
Shortly after the half of the 19th century, the great industrial crisis on the region with a strong decrease in the overall welfare as a logical consequence. Of the approximately 750 families who Kaprijke then counted, there were around 1855, just a hundred call themselves wealthy. The small farmers, weavers, innkeepers and field workers could barely make ends meet. Only one third of the population was dependent on the arms. Hence, when many families ventured the trip to America, hoping for better conditions there.
