Beautiful Gent Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is of course the « postcard photo » you can’t miss when you visit Gent where you can admire the architectural wealth of the city. The POV on those splendid monuments is so striking that I couldn’t help taking out the camera. On the foreground, you can see the former post office and its clock tower built at the beginning of the latest century. Since 2001 it has been converted into a shopping center (Post Plaza) with flats on the upper floors. Beyond you can see the famous succession of towers of Gent which you can enjoy from the St Michael’s bridge : St Nicholas church, the belfry, and then on the right hand side, St Bavo’s cathedral which is noted for one of the most important masterpiece of painting history : the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers. If you like old buildings, Gent is the place you shouldn’t miss.

C’est bien sûr l’incontournable photo « carte postale » de Gand qui permet d’admirer la richesse architecturale de la ville. Mais le point de vue sur ces splendides monuments est à ce point saisissant que je n’ai pu résisté à sortir l’appareil. Au premier plan, l’ancienne poste et sa tour de l’horloge, construite au début du siècle dernier et reconvertie depuis 2001 en centre commercial (Post Plaza) au-dessus duquel ont été aménagés des appartements. Au-delà, on aperçoit la célèbre enfilade des tours de Gand : celle de l’église Saint-Nicolas, puis du beffroi, et enfin sur la droite, la cathédrale Saint-Bavon qui renferme l’un des plus importants chefs-d’œuvre de l’histoire de la peinture, le retable de l’Agneau mystique peint par les frères Van Eyck. Amoureux des vieilles pierres, Gand est une ville à ne pas manquer.

Hi Christian,
That's many old buildings with very nice architecture in one photo counting 6 (larger) towers alone.
Too bad you didn't have a wider angle lens so you coul have included more of the bridge and the houses on the right hand side of the photo. The colors are very good here.

Excallent éclairage qui permet de bien apprécier le fin travail de toutes ces structures. Le contraste avec le bleu du ciel y est aussi pour quelques choses...

Cette anfilade d'architectures toutes aussi belles les unes que les autres est saisissante. Gand est une ville riche de son passé. Ta photo est superbe, couleurs modérées et définition sont au top. Bravo.

I really love this photo. I've taken several from that very spot, but yours is especially nice with a good blue sky that makes the stone buildings really pop. Framed very well and excellent colors & contrast.

Having lived in Gent for a year, I really enjoyed seeing your picture and reminding me how beautiful the city is, especially on a sunny day.

Ik heb speciaal deze genomen en niet uw laatste, de reden ligt voor de hand het is een van Gent.
Ik moet uw felicitren met de kwalititeit wat u aan ons toont.
Ik denk een van de meest gefotografeerde plaatsen in Gent, de kleuren en samenstelling zijn absoluut van grootte waarde.

Ik heb begrepen dat je de Nederlandse aal machtig bent, dus schrijf ik dit in het NL. Het is inderdaad DE klassieke foto van Gent en hij is prachtig! Ik ben Gentenaar en al bijn a 50 jaar weg uit de stad, maar nog steeds even chauvinist. Dit gewegd zijnd, je hoeft een groothoek om panoramische foto's te maken. Je kan een reeks maken en ze 'stitchen', ik doe dat met de regelmaat van een klok. In ieder geval hartelijk gefeliciteerd met dit prachtstukje. Groeten uit Luxemburg,

Hello Christian.
I know Gent very well, having spent a month there a few years ago, in the middle of winter, and visiting a couple more times (but never in Summer). This is an impressive photo, to get so much detail and so many buildings and towers into one picture - I imagine you must have done some distortion correction in Photoshop! Or did you join several shots together? Anyway, you have successfully managed to get nearly all of the greatest architecture of Gent into the frame, and even some of St Michael's bridge. Great work with your little camera.
