Ghent is a city with a population of a quarter of a million. Its size and position allow the inhabitants to enjoy a city with an interesting crossover between open cosmopolitanism and the quiet atmosphere of a provincial town. Ghent is thriving as many young people choose to live here instead of in the countryside or the crowded and disintegrating city centers of Brussels and Antwerp.
Ghent is a city of history. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. It was once considered the second largest city north of the alps, after Paris. The impact of this rich past can be clearly seen when viewing the imposing architecture of churches and the houses of rich traders. The whole of the city center is restored in this fashion, and still breathes the atmosphere of a thriving late-medieval city state. As the city council made the center free of cars, it is now a very welcoming and open area, which does not fail to impress even the people who live there.
Ghent is also a university city with more than 50,000 students. As such, its streets are filled with young people. But, unlike Leuven, another university town in Flanders, youth is not the only category of people living there. There is an interesting mixture of foreigners who came to live there, or artists, amongst the native people of Ghent. Interestingly, other than the smaller provincial cities or the bigger city of Antwerp, this mixture makes the people more tolerant and open-minded. This atmosphere seeps into every aspect of city life. Many people of Ghent truly see the place like home, and are very proud to live there, seeing it as a place that will always welcome them back home.

Good Morning Daniel,
This is a city that I have vowed to visit, having seen so many fine shots of it on TE. Your viewpoint creates strong leads, incorporating a variety of integrated features. There is a contrast between the quiet, twinkling canal and the busy crowds on the embankment.
I really like how the touches of yellow bind the whole together.
Have a good day,

Nice view and description of this old city. Good blue hour timing shows us the daylight as well these shining artificial lights. Well chosen vertical format. Well seen and taken.

Pleasant perspective to be seen along the canal in this well exposed night time composition. I like the lighting and the lively atmosphere with the crowds along the quayside. The barges make good pointers and help give the image depth.

J'aime beaucoup ce cadrage vertical.Il donne de l'ampleur et de la profondeur à cette composition. J'aime aussi la gestion de la lumière déclinante et des illuminations sur les bâtiments.

a very attractive and interesting view of this part of Ghent that combines picturesque and modern features. I think there's a slight tilt to the left but the perspective that runs through the vertical frame captures our glance and makes our observation very pleasant. I also like the combination of moody evening tones with rich and luminous warm colours. The bright reflection is a very lovely touch that works for the compositional balance too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

A very nice photo from Ghent. There is a fine combination of street-life, getting busy towards the evening, and a canal coming to rest for the night. A yellow neon light is very nicely reflected in the dark water. I like the blueish evening tone of the photo.

un'ora (quasi) blu colta molto bene con una perfetta fusione della luce naturale con quella artificiale.
Molto indovinato il taglio verticale che include quanto necessario per una perfetta fruizione della scena.
Colori eccellenti e molto suggestivi.
Ciao e buona serata

Yes, Ghent surely is everything you have written about it.
Beautiful wintery blue hour shot with the illuminated parts and the reflection in the water nicely in contrast with the sky.
Best regards, Paul

Bon format verticale qui accentue la profondeur, la prise des lumières , une très jolie présentation

lo scatto è molto bello, ma il riflesso dorato è fantastico.
Ancora una volta, il tuo scatto verticale, ha fatto centro.

It looks like Amsterdam, Another interesting photo from Ghent. I have to say I already saw the John's photos from this city today. Good colors of the blue hour, impressive reflection of the neon lights.
Best wishes from Russia!

Smart choice of a vertical frame and I like the aged look given by the green moss growing on the weathered wooden boards. Nice reflections and superb warm cold color contrasts between the blue and yellow. Excellent sharpness and linear perspective with good repetition of the boats along the canal. Bon weekend!

My eyes go to the pub in the distance :-)
Nice perspective with the canal. the artifical lights on the buildings lends good beauty to the blueish hour shot
Kielia (21953) 2013-12-12 8:47
this is a beautiful blue hour shot and a great reflection. But the best feature is of course the sleeping tourist boats. It is the essence of the canal. My compliments!
