inner court of the Sint-Pietersabdij (Abbey of Saint-Peter), one of the oldest momuments in Flanders

The original abbey was built in the 7th century by one Amandus of Ghent. Originally it lay just outside the city proper. From the 9th until the 11th century this is where the counts of Flanders were buried. It stopped being an abbey in 1794, to become an army garrison and later a prison. Now the impressive buildings belong to the city of Ghent and are a great place for cultural and historical exhibitions.
