Photographer’s Note

This is the Vooruit, a socialist Volkshuis ("people's house") dating from the beginning of the 20th century. In the first half of the century it was a very popular place for workers (and unionists) to meet, get informed and have fun.

When I was a student at the University of Ghent, it was best known for its (rock) concerts. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Albert King, Rory Gallagher, John Cale, Motörhead...they all played here!

Today it is still a very active place, hosting a wide variety of cultural activities and events. It also has one of the best cafés in Ghent.

I really like this shot.
Light and colors are very well balanced. Composition, POV and prospective are perfect.

Dag Benny,
An original perspective on this symbol of progress of the working class only a few generations ago. The red letters and stripes in the brick wall are quite symbolic. I have never been there for a concert but I should...
