Photographer’s Note
Hello best TE friends, I must still look for in my archive, my bike accident last longer than original fore see.
One year ago I was in Antwerp, I took these wonderful Our of Lady Cathedral, I cropped this image for the disturbing sides.
Where the cathedral now stands, there was a small chapel of Our Lady from the 9th to the 12th century, which acquired the status of parish church in 1124.
During the course of the twelfth century, it was replaced by a larger Romanesque church(80 meters (260 ft) long and 42 meters (140 ft) wide).
In 1352, construction was begun on a new Our Lady’s church which would become the largest gothic church in the Netherlands. In the beginning, it was to be provided with two towers of equal height. In 1521, after nearly 170 years, the new church of Our Lady was ready. The south tower reached only as far as the third string course.
During the night of October 5-6, 1533, the new church was largely gutted by fire. The completion of the second tower was therefore delayed, which led to its ultimate postponement. Moreover, the church only became cathedral of the bishopric of Antwerp in 1559 but lost this title again from 1801 to 1961, following the Concordat of 1801.
During the Iconoclasm of August 20, 1566 (at the starting of the Eighty Years' War), Protestants destroyed a large part of the cathedral interior. Later, when Antwerp came under Protestant administration in 1581, a number of artistic treasures were once again destroyed, removed or sold. The restoration of Roman Catholic authority came in 1585 with the fall of Antwerp.
In 1794 the French revolutionaries that conquered the region plundered the Our Lady’s Cathedral and inflicted serious damage. Around 1798, the French administration intended to demolish the building but after each blow, the cathedral was able to recover. In 1816, various important works of art were returned from Paris, including three Rubens masterpieces. And over the course of the 19th century, the church was completely restored and refurnished.
Between 1965 and 1993, a complete restoration took place.
I hope you like it.

Hello John,
What other marvelous images do you have sitting in your archives because this one is particularly beautiful.
The clarity and colours in this image are superb. Excellent POV as well. The look along the street to the cathedral shows us how the spire dominates the skyline.
A lovely capture.

Bonjour, mon bon ami John,

Mooi en heel helder zicht van de Suikerrui met de geliefde Antwerpse toren;

Hi John
Not only a fantastic view of the city and of course the Cathedral, but how did you manage such a shot with no traffic or people walking around? Great POV to use the road to lead us to the cathedral, good clarity and sharpness with splashes of red and yellow to add a little colour to the buildings.
Cheers

Hello Dear John,
A Carper Frame is a very good way of displaying this image of the cathedral. The composition with the spire in the center, balanced with the dome on the left and the convergence of the lines of perspective at the church, is very effective.

Beautiful shot and a very nice POV, with the road bring us right to the cathedral. Though it was in the middle but it balanced by other structures around, wich make it a good composition. Technically, you know you're an expert on that so I won't have to say much about, other than congratulations on another wondeful shot. Thanks John

Hoi John,
Mooie plaat!

Sterk perspectief....zeer fraai.

Hoi, John.
Fulvio.

Dag John,
As usual, there are at least too outstanding things: clarity/sharpness and POV/framing/compo. Charming architecture that you knew how to turn into a beautiful photo.
The "stains" on the FG soil, which I imagine are traces of the cloning of some disturbing passer-by, isn't exactly annoying, but it is a bit as a surprise seeing such "imperfection" in one of your posts.

Note très intéressante.

Hi John,
The presence of the people and of the cars has an effect of scale. The point of view takes our eyes toward the bell tower in the background which is giving depth and perspective to the photo. It is also allowing us to see the details and colors of the different buildings. The quality of the light is enhancing the colors of the daily scene. Have a good weekend.

Hello John,
Amazing sharpness in the architectural details!
The point of view is pleasant, giving a fine perspective on the street leading to the church...
The varied light is nicely managed, with one shady side of the street!

Dag John.

Hello John, Amazing History, it is a wonder or a miracle it has survived, first the fire & after that so many people that wanted it destroyed but to day it stands very proud & beautifully restored, fantastic story. Very interesting street scene with main focus on this majestic looking Cathedral, excellent contrast, colour & detail. First time I have noticed a black cross.
Also thank you for your very informative note.

Hi John,
The splendid architecture that offers us this capture, the perspective obtained with your setting, and the magnificent effect created by the light and the shades in this urban scenery, they form a really beautiful composition, with a great technical execution.
Nice work, my friend.
Best regards,

Hello John:
A wonderful frame and a brilliant perspective.
The linear forms of the diverse architectonic estates, balance well in the composition.
The detail of the spear cut alongside is a pity left, but it is only a detail, that does not interfere in the great professional quality of your image.
Greetings from Colombia, John

Hello John.
A great POV with the spectacular tower of the cathedral to the bottom, I take a similar capture, but I like mas this approach. Precious color and great brightness.
Best regards.

Goedemorgen John,
Bedankt!
Groeten,
Lars

Hello John.
Just found your interesting view of the cathedral. I like this shot of the street without traffic or people on this fine sunny day. Maybe it was a Sunday morning! The perspective and depth are great, and the square format suits the subject. I think you have removed the distortion which is also appropriate for this view. Reading your note, I realise that next time I must visit the cathedral and have a look inside.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi John,
The cathedral you present has really a splendid architecture. It is so rich and unique. This seems to be really a very beautiful town.
Showing the church from a distance you assured a good perspective, I like the framing with all the nice buildings on both sides. They are pretty but they also create those diagonal lines which are nicely leading our eyes to the church.
I like also the small townhouses in the center.
The variety of the architectural elements adds to the atmosphere of richness of this place.
Even the crossing for pedestrians add an additional geometrical elements to the shot, I really like it.
The light conditions were not easy because half of the buildings are in the shade but the result is beautiful.
Excellent work,
M

How are you doing? I have been busy for quite a while & did not frequent TE for quite a while. Thanks for this wonderful post from Antwerpen, a city where I stayed for more than 2 years & have fond memories! A classical scene taken from the bank of Schelde. Good work!
Best Regards
