New site Aug 2013: all new pictures
I hope you enjoy of these picture, I try always to do my best for a good picture.
Saturday two weeks ago I did a small trip to Brussels.
The market was a little bit changed with green trees and flowers.
Also the city hall was completely with flowers ornate, but forbidden take pictures. A pity I did not know this.
My picture is taken with in background the "Bread house" together with the city hall the one of the most beautiful buildings of the market.
The Grand Place is the central square of Brussels.
The square, famous for its aesthetic and historical wealth, is surrounded by the Town Hall, the King's House and many guild houses.
The Grand Place is considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world (according to include the French writer Victor Hugo, who was in Brussels).
The Grand-Place of Brussels since 1998 on the list of World Heritage of UNESCO.
History of the Market:
On the Grand Place many historical events played out.
A brief overview:
1523: the Inquisition put Voes and Hendrik Jan Van Essen, the first Protestant martyrs, there at the stake
1563: the Counts Egmont and Horn are beheaded in August 1695. Brussels is attacked during the War of the League of Augsburg (Nine Years' War). The French troops, led by Marshal de Villeroy, destroying most homes during a raid on the Grand Place, which some in wood. Only the façade and the tower of City Hall, the purpose of the shelling, and some stone walls remained standing between the burning cannon balls.
The various guilds built the houses quickly again, this time in stone. It is also the home of the brewers, which now houses the Museum Brouwer.

La Grand Place fleurie est un spectacle que je n'ai malheureusement jamais vu. Merci de me faire partager un peu ce plaisir par cette très bonne photo.

You have, as always, written a very interesting and informative note. I think it is strange that it is forbidden to take photographs of the city hall from the outside: I can understand why they would not want people taking pictures inside but outside pictures surely cannot be a security threat?
The buildings here are indeed very beautiful and I can understand why people have thought this to be the most beautiful square in the world. You have captured the scene perfectly and the foreground flowerbeds add to the appeal as also does the little crowd of people in front of the buildings.
Perfect light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
dkmurphys (42567) 2013-09-02 1:30
Spectacular exhibition in the Grand Place. I like the pov and the colors, well taken postcard.
Enjoy a fine new week.
snunney (72762) 2013-09-02 3:03
A superb capture of this iconic square in Brussels. The point of view is well chosen to give the image depth and show us these delightful buildings to best advantage. The composition has a pleasant animated atmosphere to it and I like the splashes of colour offered by the flower beds. Top class technical presentation as always.
jacquest (16428) 2013-09-02 3:37
This is a superb view with a good POV on this architecture and surrounding garden decorations. The light gives good and natural colors and excellent details of this beautiful architecture.
Sergiom (45527) 2013-09-02 4:47
Je crois que tu n'as pas à t'inquiéter en ce qui concerne la qualité de cette photographie. Elle est superbe, comme cette belle place qui prend des habits différents pour la célébration.
pierrefonds (51040) 2013-09-02 5:14
I remember visiting this place at the end of April 2011. The wideness of the area is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the buildings. The good luminosity is enhancing the beauty of the colours. Have a nice day.
timecapturer (37152) 2013-09-02 5:59
a lesson in composition this with a perfectly chosen POV with flower bed lines that entice and contrast with the exquisite detailing of the buildings so beautifully. Quality is superb and the image just captivating. Love the green and blue sheep, they look fab!
Have a good week - Brian.

Brussels Market is beautiful like the whole City. I know this place from my father's relates. I have cousin who lives here. She is Polish but she is married with Greek. They live already there 30 years.
Beautiful city and beautiful shot.
Is it the square where flower carpets are occasionally presented?
It's a pity that in some interesting places taking photos is forbidden :-(
Thank you for interesting note about history of this place. TFS
Kind regards and all the best
ourania (18704) 2013-09-02 7:29
this is a marvellous photo, you're offering us the elegance of the elaborate architecture as well as the ornamentation of the square in such a captivating way. Your picture has excellent definition on details and makes every single pattern attractive. The flower path is exquisitely placed in the frame adding dynamism. The colours are lovely and the contrasts you've created are alluring. Congratulations and thank you! I don't understand why they forbid taking photos of the flower decorated City Hall, it would give so many opportunities!
All the best, have a great day,
holmertz (31340) 2013-09-02 8:02
The city gardeners have certainly made this square look nice with all these flowers and lawns. The buildings, of course, have remained as impressive and majestic för hundreds of years already. The colours and sharpness of the photo are superb, and I like the inclusion of a lot of people and a green and blue cow (or maybe it is sheep).
But has Belgium become a kind of Soviet Union or an African dictatorship? Forbidding photos of the city hall sounds incredible. How is that possible in a democracy in 2013?
subhendu_bagchi (21110) 2013-09-02 8:02
namaste John, a great shot as ever. Technically perfect. Great composition, perfect light and facincting colours. The hall is beautiful with the flowers in foreground. Great shot. Tfs.

PaulVDV (17331) 2013-09-02 10:41
Schnappilic (9088) 2013-09-02 12:03
Your presentation of Brussels market is very good, as always. Your framing is very suitable for this beautiful architecture. Congratulations!

John, I don't think that you have to try hard to get a good picture..taking pictures is very natural to you!!
You can "read" the subject and as a great artist you can put a marvelous composition together as the one showing today!
a simply beautiful picture and yes, I like it very much!
ACL1978 (6501) 2013-09-02 18:50
An amazing and beautiful sight, John! Such a shame that photography is prohibited at the City Hall. Why, I wonder? Still, you made the best of the situation here. Thanks!

when I think of Brussels, this is the type of look that comes to mind.
perhaps its the 'postcard' look and not how the people of Belgium live today, but it works for me :)
smart looking POV, the angle shows off the size and depth of the buildings well.
lovely clouds and lighting too.
very pretty scene all around
Alco (5455) 2013-09-03 20:06

Did they give you a reason why photography was forbidden? I am finding that the world is getting more and more hostile to photography these days. Soon, we are going to have to carry licences for our cameras.
I love the ornate details you were able to capture from so far away.
Silvio1953 (105599) 2013-09-05 12:05
Ciao John, great view of lovely square with fantastic buildings, wonderful colors, excellent clarity and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
photoray (6690) 2013-09-05 13:10
Glad you made this "forbidden image" of the exquisite gothic City Hall and Bread House, including the garden hills and surrounding cobblestone pathways. And I suppose the interiors are even more attractive?
jcpix (6596) 2013-09-05 15:10
I feel very fortunate to have visited Grande Place once before, and it's no wonder it's often referred to as the most beautiful public square in the world...and this is an image that supports that notion 100%!! I've always wanted to return for the flower carpets, but this actually looks even more interesting...almost an Oz kind of look and feel. :) What a terrific day for the weather to cooperate, all of this majestic architecture and lovely display with a blue sky and a few light clouds is just the icing on the cake. I could go on an on about details, but I'll keep it simple and say that it's certainly nothing short of excellent! One of my favorites from your gallery! Have a great day ahead.
ChrisJ (91292) 2013-09-06 7:36
I've heard talk of Brussels being a boring city but I see no evidence of that here with visually stunning architecture and wonderful colour & sharpness. The people add scale and animate the shot. Excellent density and light contrasts. Tfs!
mohammad_H (7488) 2013-09-07 4:40

The flower festival makes this already breathtaking market place even more attractive. The architectural diversity here simply is stunning and all the details on the facades are simply wonderful.

I have been an absentee member lately of Trekearth (we were on a lengthy trip to the Mediterranean). I have seen this scene before, but as usual this is a technically perfect photo of the of the Bread House, with a very informative note. The red flowers under the trees adds color highlight, immediately attracting attention.
Warm regards good friend,
krzychu30 (12759) 2013-09-08 1:23
well known square and architecture, but to see the same scene and square decorated with so delightful flowers and plants makes the place takes on a completely new meaning and character for us.
Excellently composed,framed and presented scene!
It´s really a pleasure for our eyes to discover every part of it.Amazing how some greenery and flowers can change perception of the same place.
Excellent job John!
Wish You a pleasant sunday

Hi John, Amazing view of the Brussels Grand Place. It looks quite different that I remember it. is this a special exhibition with the trees and the small hills or it is just rebuilt? I do not understand also this case with photos. Were you not allowed to make photos in the square? It sounds incredible. very often you can'rt make photos inside or when there are military area but on the public square?? anyway, spectacular composition with gorgeous sharpness and colours.
williewhistler (9875) 2013-09-08 14:47
thank you for your recent visit,I think however that you may have confused me with WillPerrett regarding a recent critique,an easy mistake to make...
This is as usual from you a thoughtfully composed photograph of the most elegant of buildings, the clarity is first rate, a delightful shot.
Kind regards Les.

Great shot of this market place. Fascinating buildings. you have an excellent POV here. TFS.
mkamionka (27089) 2013-09-11 8:17
what a beautiful presentation of this famous square. Great light created vivid colors. And the carpets of flowers make such a pleasant foreground. It works very surprising to see so much plants in the middle of the square, they were put there as if they were really part of the place. Very convincing.
I have once visited Belgium on a business trip and had just one hour free and I planned to visit this square but the trains stopped due to an accident for this exact hour which I had before my return flight.
I was so sad that I was so close and I could not see it. So I am glad to see it in your photos,

Of course this "laced" architecture is of first magnitude, especially when shown by side light for a 3D impression!
The blue and green sheeps standing in mid-plaza adorn beautifully the artistically-designed pavement that adds much depth to the historic place.
I sent you the panning test

now I have seen many of your excellent images from Belgium and find, that the relevant institutions for tourist advertising of your country should be thankful for this. The way you photograph interesting places attracts tourists, that's for sure.
This image is not an exception to it. It is also very nice and excellent captured. With glorious colors, great sharpness of details and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
A perfect picture!
Have a great weekend
