If you compare the rails in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Finland and in other countries, you will see that they are different! Russian rails lay wider, that's why our coaches are wider and more comfortable (IMHO).

This shot was made on the Belarus-Poland border. It is how the wheels are changed to fit the another country standart. They lift a coach, take away the old wheels and place a new ones under the coach. Then the coach is lowered and you can continue your travel! The passangers are in their compartments all the time and if you cross the border in night, you will simply don't notice the whole operation.

This shot was made in my Moscow-Prague trip. Hope it will be interesting for you.

Hi Katya,
the shot is really interesting, and the explanatory note is very interesting, too (I think it is because you wrote it through your own perception)!
I happened to cross the Finnish-Russian border on the train at night, and I was sleeping; but I couldn't even guess that they do something like that :)
I think this photo is in the true spirit of TE!
Good POV, good composition. And there is some strange glowing mysterious haze about this place :) I understand that it's because of the light.... and yet...!

The photo is a bit obscured by windows I guess, but it brings back nice memories, also I'm surprised they do it with czech trains (CD = Ceske Drahy), I always travelled through Brest in Soviet built trains.
