I borrow the title from a T. Hardy's poem just because of the contrast I experienced visiting both this Church and Stephensdom.
Stephensdom is yet the most important church in Wien but also a big attraction for masses of tourists which walk across it like cattles....I did not honestly feel any spirituality at all there.
Maria am Gestade is a quite hidden church although you can easily reach it from Schottentor on the way to the old Jewish Area...but it is not very visited.
I and my parents were practically the only ones there - apart from a nun. So I liked the silence, the quiet, this soft light...it was a particular spiritual mood. the most suitable place for praying.

Maria am Gestade (St. Mary on the Strand) church ranks among Vienna's oldest buildings and one of the few surviving examples of Gothic architecture in the city. The church is located at Salvatorgasse 12, near the Donaukanal and was traditionally used by sailors on the Danube.
It is said that there was a wooden church at this place in the 9th century, which served as a place of worship for fishermen and sailors. The church is first mentioned in documents from 1158. The present building was built between 1394 and 1414 in gothic style, and in 1409, the church became part of the Diocese of Passau. It remained an enclave when the Diocese of Vienna was established in 1469. The church was desecrated in 1786 and gradually became dilapidated. It was used as a storeroom and stable during Napoleon's occupation of Vienna in 1809. In 1812, the church was renovated and newly consecrated. The church is associated with the Czech community in Vienna. |

Ovviamente ora sono affascianato da questo tipo di foto.
Si può abbracciare tutto in questa, forse un po' velata, ma del tutto ben composta.
Le luci sono difficili da gestire in queste situazioni.
