This is a part of the facade of the Hundertwasser house in Vienna. The photo was taken on a cloudy day.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 – 2000) was an Austrian painter and sculptor. By the end of the 20th century, he was arguably the best-known living Austrian artist, though he was always controversial.

Hundertwasser's original, unruly, sometimes shocking artistic vision expressed itself in pictorial art, environmentalism, philosophy, and design of facades, postage stamps, flags, and clothing (among other areas). The common themes in his work are a rejection of the straight line, bright colours, organic forms, a reconciliation of humans with nature, and a strong individualism. He remains sui generis, although his architectural work is comparable to Antoni Gaudí in its biomorphic forms and use of tile. He was inspired by the works of Egon Schiele from an early date, and his style was often compared to that of Gustav Klimt. He was fascinated with spirals, and called straight lines "the devil's tools". He called his theory of art "transautomatism", based on Surrealist automatism, but focusing on the experience of the viewer, rather than the artist.

Although Hundertwasser first achieved notoriety for his boldly-coloured paintings, he is more widely renowned today for his revolutionary architectural designs, which incorporate natural features of the landscape, and use of irregular forms in his building design. Hundertwasserhaus, a low-income apartment block in Vienna, features undulating floors ("an uneven floor is a melody to the feet"), a roof covered with earth and grass, and large trees growing from inside the rooms, with limbs extending from windows. He took no payment for the design of Hundertwasserhaus, declaring that it was worth it, to "prevent something ugly from going up in its place".

The Hundertwasser House Vienna was built between 1983 and 1986 by architects Prof. Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan. It features undulating floors ("an uneven floor is a melody to the feet"), a roof covered with earth and grass, and large trees growing from inside the rooms, with limbs extending from windows. Hundertwasser took no payment for the design of the house, declaring that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from going up in its place.
Within the house there are 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces and three communal terraces, and a total of 250 trees and bushes.

Hoi Harko
Mooie uitsnede van Hundertwasser.
Het is grappig dat de nok van de huizen aan de overkant weerspiegeld wordt in de ramen van maar 1 etage. Mooie regenachtige kleuren.
Groet,
Huub de K.

Well seen! The details of the facades are really well isolated in your photograph. Simple and striking, I like that!

Hello Harko,

Wonderful and unusual shot, nicely composed and exposed. I like the informative note that accompanies the photo, including the title!
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi Harko,
I did a search on Hundertwasser to compare your shot with others here in TE, and I think this is the best one. Your got close enough to show details clearly, and this angle gives the wall quite dynamic look showing all lines in diagonal. Flat light presents well all the colours.

Nice picture...

Hi Harko,
A surprising house, I like these strange shapes and colors combinations, but possibly what I prefer here is the left part where the traditional style melts with the creative one.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi Harko.
I know the place very well...and I know that it is not easy to photograph this building.
It appeals to me the obtained result.
Regards
Renzo

Hi Harko.

Great contrast. A straight wall made of curved lines ;-)

Well seen

thanks

Tony
