Photographer’s Note
‘Vienna: Window in a mosaic’
For many visitors of Vienna the St. Stephen's Cathedral is the number one attraction.
The uniqueness of this cathedral and the countless thousands of details of which it is comprised make it a real treasure.
Very impressive is the wonderful tiled roof.
I posted a detail of this roof as my main picture.
In the workshop I posted two other pictures that give you a better total idea of the outside of the cathedral and one more photo of the mosaic of tiles in detail.
From Wikipedia:
A glory of St. Stephen's Cathedral is its ornately patterned, richly coloured roof, 111 meters (361 ft) long, and covered by 230,000 glazed tiles.
Above the choir on the south side of the building the tiles form a mosaic of the double-headed eagle that is symbolic of the empire ruled from Vienna by the Habsburg dynasty.
On the north side the coats of arms of the City of Vienna and of the Republic of Austria are depicted.
In 1945, fire caused by World War II damage to nearby buildings leapt to the north tower of the cathedral and went on to destroy the wooden framework of the roof.
Replicating the original bracing for so large a roof (it rises 38 meters above the floor) would have required an entire square kilometre of forest, so over 600 metric tons of steel bracing were used instead.
The roof is so steep that it is sufficiently cleaned by the rain alone and is seldom covered by snow.

ciao Paul,

Salut Paul,
Colorfully repeating roof tiles created fantastic graphics and you saw it, captured perfectly. I couldn't imagined but your complementary posts worked excellently for more wider views. The roof is really huge! Very good clarity and sharpness, congratulations. Have a nice new week.

Dag Paul,
Zeer mooi gedaan mijn vriend, bedankt.
Groeten,
John

The roof tiles really create a beautiful pattern. I might have perhaps placed the window a bit further off center but other than that it's an interesting scene that has been captured quite well by you. Really quite interesting how pictures with only a couple of elements in them can sometimes turn out to be the best ones...

Very nice graphical roof view, this small window looks very lonely among all these tiles, less centered views would certainly have been worth a shot, maybe you have tried them too.

Hello Paul,
In viewing the thumbprint edition of this image, and seeing the brilliant colors and zigzag pattern of the roof tiles, I had suspected that I was about to see the roofline of St. Stephen's Cathedral. This photograph does not disappoint. It is a magnificent detail shot, complemented by a highly informative note. I remember going up to the spire also, fortunately in an elevator, in 1986. The window breaks up what could have been a monotonous, albeit lovely pattern. Well done!
Warm regards,
Bulent

Amazing pattern geometric patterns, well profited to render a great photo. It's curious and it makes the photo more interesting that the window isn't symmetrically placed.

Hi Paul,
this is another place which I visited and I did not take pictures there at all.
This church is so cool. I really like its unique architecture, and you focused here on one of the most peculiar fragments which is the roof. It is a brilliant idea. Very well realized,
