Photographer’s Note

Goldeness Dachl or Golden Roof is a landmark in the old city center of Innsbruck. It was built in 1500 for Maximilian I of Habsburg (1459- 1519). It is from the balcony of Goldeness Dachl that he watched sporting & other events down on the square below ... now actually an intersection of many pedestrian streets and alleys lined with many colorful & interesting old buildings. The reliefs on the balcony show coats of arms, symbols, and other figures associated with his life. The roof is decorated with 2657 fire-gilded copper tiles. Click HERE for a closer look at the Goldeness Dachl.

Maximilian I was also the Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death. Through wars and marriages he extended the Habsburg influence in every direction: to the Netherlands, Spain, Bohemia, Hungary, Poland, and Italy. This influence would last for centuries and shape much of European history.

PS: Many tourists are quite amused by the human statue out there. There are many buildings lining the square such as the Helblinghaus and the Town Hall (to be posted later) but it was difficult to avoid her.
