Photographer's Note

I took this picture in my winter holidays in Austria.
I had to climb a steep hill through 30cm of snow to get this shot on the way back down I ripped my trousers sliding down the hill. So it was quite an expensive shot, but I hope you think it was worth it.
Ellmau is a beautiful place for skiing and snowboarding in the Alps.

This emblematic Ellmau monument was built in 1719. The chapel contains a Baroque altar with an altarpiece depicting the Visitation of Mary by Alois Wagner.

Hi Liliana, Yes it was worth ripping your trousers for 'sorry to hear about that but i could not help laughing', you have managed the light superbly well & a beautiful blue tinge to the photo, the POV is excellent, so i,m glad you climbed, it is a little hazy in the back ground or was it low cloud, what ever it was it has not spoiled a wonderful image, i love the little chapel it is gorgeous, kind regards Wilson.

Well I would say it was definitely worth ripping a pair of trousers for! The light is wonderful and the blue hue makes it look even more wintry and cold. It was worth it for sure to clim there and shoot, since you managed to get such a nice photo! Great mood, good technique, nice framing. I would only have tried to have a bit more sky up and a bit less snow down.

Sorry about the pants but it was definitely worth it! This is a wonderful photo. You caught the lighting perfectly to get the photo in the blue hour. The color and lighting are fantastic with great sharpness and DOF. The lights on the buildings add warmth that is great.

A very beautiful night capture and with a strong aesthetic effect, thanks to his light and the blue domineering tones in the set, splashed with the lights of the village in the valley.
The snow has a strong contrast with the trees, and the fog creates an effect furthermore winter to the image.
The setting with the church of traditional architecture in foreground has a lot of interest, and the field depth allows us to enjoy the beauty of the background.
Nice photo, and nice place for a few calm vacations of skiing.

This is certainly a postcard-style shot! I prefer this version over the day time (which is also beautiful) - the blue color cast of dusk combined with the dim lighting of the town is very impressive! Compositionally speaking, good choice of framing - taking part of the tree to frame the church from the left and the backdrop of the town in the valley - well done!
My only remark is about your composition - You framed the church too tight and you can feel it is a little "pressed" - a bit of space and it was even better!
Even so, Well done!

Charming are these blues which the evening painted over white surfaces of the snow. The wonderful atmosphere of warm lights tracing human sediments. Not sure I'm 100% sold on this one - I find the imbalance of the tree framing the image from the left a little disconcerting + a minor quibble with just missing the top of the church cross and perhaps just a little tilt still to the right that doesn't favour such a beautifully 'precise' looking image. The effect of this light and your exposure produces a striking image but one that i feel could have been better to support the subject.....a very nice looking image though.

Hi Liliana - excellent perspectibe, and timing, the blue hour performs its magic here, I like the off centre position of the bulbous belltower, though I wish the top of the cross was not touching the frame.

You asked why I never went to Romania, actually I did, TWICE, in 1997 and 2000, but I spilled hot coffee on the negatives by accident (with milk, but no sugar:-), so they are badly damaged, anyway I have a few undamaged ones, but they are not good photos, I will upload one of them this week, just to add Romania to the list :-)

A trecut ceva timp si observ ca abilitatile tale de fotograf s-au imbunatatit considerabil. Imi face placere sa gasesc la tine o fotografie nocturna realizata corect si cu o compozitie de exceptie. Inclusiv rama se potriveste foarte bine cu peisajul din fotografie! Bravo!

Definitely Liliana this shot worth a trousers ! Would you do it again ???? Very nice picture indeed. All have been said by TE members but I like the fact that the chapel is slightly on the right side showing us a gorgeous landscape and another church down the hill.

A very nice night picture of this traditional Austrian church. The snow convering the off and lanscape smoothens all the shapes and curves and creates a very nice background for the blue night color. Very nice background combining shaprness for the village (with the little lights) and a more blurred aspect with the clouds very low over the mountain.

What a nice night shot you post here! Wow! It looks like a small Christma´s Village. I was trying to find Santa flying on the sky, but I think that he is already inside one of these wonderful toy-houses. Absolutely great! I love it! I would like to see one scenery like this one day...

Straight out of a Christmas storybook. :) I love the little lights, and the blue! I would've left more space at the top, however, to get all of the cross in...and maybe cropped out the tree on the left? Overall, great shot!

Hi Liliana,
Excellent use of available light. Very 3D feel to this image, with good sense of depth, which I find is not always easy to convey and I think the haze is actually a contributing factor, as it makes the scene fade into the distance. Looking at the photo I feel like I am standing on top of that hill. The chapel is very well positioned and nicely illuminated from the side. It draws the viewer into the photo. The blue tones make this a really pleasant image to look at.

This photograph is definitely worth the cost of a pair of trousers, Lili. The blue light is just fabulous, and the atmosphere you have caputured so peaceful. Maybe I would have adjusted my POV 5 degrees to the left so that the monument was a little more to the right and there was a little more of the tree on the left in frame (but that's a personal preference in composition). Warm lights in the blue are really beautiful. Captured exquisitely the atmosphere of Tyrol in the blue moment.
It reminds me Silent Night Chapel Oberndorf north of Salzburg visited at 1999.

Ohhh! Liliana, I've just discovered this one scanning the "favorite gallery"... This is so beautiful!

The soft blue hue all over the landscape create a stunning impression. I like how the church "glows" in the background and how you have use the other one in the foreground. Mist covering the mountains adds the final touch, for this masterly executed blue hour shot.
