One of the graet sport events of this summer is the football EURO 2008 that is held in Switzerland-Austria. My son and I were among the fortunates to visit the City of Salzburg and at the same time to watch the Hellas-Spain game.

Salzburg is a fairly tale city full of the memory of Mozart and it's worth visiting even during the summer, with winter preferable of course. This photo is taken from the Festung Hohensalzburg Fortress which is the largest fortress in Europe. There will be some pictures of it to come in the near future.

Salzburg is dubbed the - Rome of the North - because of its many churches. It is a compact town easy to get around on foot.

Salzburg is packed with attractions: churches, mansions, museums. The old city offers all of those on a small surface.

On the outskirts of the city is one of Salzburg’s top attractions Hellbrunn Castle. Its water gardens seen in The Sound of Music are great fun especially for kids: When Archbishop Markus Sitticus built the place in the 1600s he had trick fountains mounted in the floors and walls. To satisfy his quirky sense of humor he occasionally sprayed his guests by activating a secret mechanism.

From the City of Salzburg, that jewel of World Cultural Heritage, to the lush Alpine meadows of the Hohe Tauern National Park, from the much-sung lake country of the Salzkammergut region to the mighty glacier of the Grossglockner - all of this combined with a pristine, healthy environment, making the SalzburgerLand the perfect setting to visit.

Rivers, gorges and waterfalls, lakes as clear as can be, hot springs, ice caves – in the Salzburger Land, you can experience the whole wide world of water. Enjoy all types of fun in and on the water, including swimming, sailing, surfing, diving, wildwater sports, boating and cruises.

Crystal-clear lakes, majestic mountain peaks, gentle hillsides of green, babbling streams and, nestled between them all, delightful towns and villages – with the world-famous City of Mozart, Salzburg, leading the way.

Hello Stella,

Again, this brings to mind the great physicists Heisenberg's words, "Never underestimate how much pleasure it gives a man to see what he already knows." So it is for me, that very spot where I took some photos — slides — in the pre-digital day of 1989. The vantage point is perfect for this photograph, and the light management, colors and resolution are befitting. It must have been a memorable experience for your son to see the places, walk the streets, and perhaps hear the music of one of the Titans of music.

In an archaeology magazine from ten years ago there was a feature article on the skull of Mozart. In the film "Amadeus," he was seen to die and then buried in a mass paupers' grave. This is true, but ten years after he died, a phrenologists gave the gravedigger a little money, and the man who had participated in the internment of Mozart, dug up the head. The phrenologist was trying to correlate genius with skulls and bumps (and there were skulls accessible of clearly gifted composers still around). For a century, the skull was bandied around the collection of European wealthy families. By 1901 the skull found its way into the Mozartiana Collection in Salzburg, but without real evidence that it had belonged to the great composer. Then in the 1980's forensic pathologists built up the head (as skulls are now done for identification), and alas Mozart's likeness emerged, matching portraits painted from life.

Great shot and the vicarious opportunity to visit Salzburg,

Bulent

Very good the point of capturing and interesting architecture, too! The definition of the details is fine as well as the attribution of the colours. Salzburg looks a fairly tale city, indeed.

Thanks for sharing,
Athanasios.
