Photographer’s Note
I took this photo while strolling around the Mönchsberg. This is a great opportunity to explore ancient walls and will provide you with some magnificent views on Salzburg and the surrounding scenery. Walls and fortifications existed on the Mönchsberg since the 13th century. Located to the west of the Hohensalzburg Fortress - this heavily forested ridge extends for about 2km (1 1/2 miles) above the old town. You can get up there by taking the express elevators leaving from Gstättengasse.
Across the river on the far left, as it was winter and the trees had lost their leaves, you have a good view of the old city wall.
And on the Universitätsplatz (University Square), prominent in the photo, is an elaborate Baroque church of Salzburg, the Kollegien or Universitätskirche (University Church). It was built under the management of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and dedicated to “Unserer Lieben Frau” (Our Blessed Lady).
