Photographer’s Note

View of the Salzburg Cathedral taken from the Salzburg Fortress. Located where Residenzplatz flows into Domplatz in Salzburg, Salzburg Cathedral (Domkirche St. Rupert) is renowned for its harmonious Baroque architecture and 4,000-pipe organ. It also contains a medieval font in which Mozart was baptized.
This site has hosted a Christian church since 774. The original was replaced with a late-Romanesque structure built in 1181-1200.(sacred-destinations.com)
The Romanesque cathedral burned down in 1598 and Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich took advantage of (some would say caused) the destruction to demolish the rest and make plans for a grand new cathedral to reaffirm Salzburg's commitment to the Catholic cause in the face of the Reformation.
However, Dietrich's overthrow prevented the completion of this project. The present cathedral was commissioned by Archbishop Markus Sittikus Count Hohenems and designed by the Italian architect Santino Solari. It was consecrated in 1628 by Archbishop Paris Count Lodron.

The (big) buildings on the background seem very tiny compared to this cathedral.

Salzburg is one of those places in Europe that has a unique flavour. I remember this sight from the fortress and I must have shot the same picture as this one, only it was a slide and it lies buried somewhere in my basement...
You found a good light that gives to the whole image a bright atmosphere, and the fine sharpness allow us to appreciate even the smaller details.

A good view of the cathedral taking excellent advantage of the downwards viewpoint offered by the fortress. Good colours and sharpness. I see that the outdoor chess still attracts the attention of the crowds.

You have informed your wonderful photograph of Salzburg Cathedral with effective note. The view is close to my heart from a visit I made there in 1986, following a series of talks I gave in Vienna. With somewhat subdued light, you have produced a sharp image, devoid of harshly contrasting areas of light and shadows.

Wonderfully busy composition with this beautiful Austurian architecture seen in great details and strong natural colors.
It is amazing how Europeans are so conscious of space and how croweded their old cities are compared to American cities.

this cathedral is not easy to photograph. I find the main advantage of your photo that the structure of the building is perfectly visible while down on the place the room is simply too small to get an acceptable perspective. Well taken!
