Photographer’s Note

Dem Bau der gotischen Pfarrkirche aus dem 15. Jahrhundert sind bereits mehrere vorromanische und romanische Bauphasen vorausgegangen. Die ehemalige Klosterkirche von Mondsee zählt zu den größten Baudenkmälern Österreichs. Im Bereich der ersten vier Kirchenjoche des dreischiffigen Innenraumes ist der ursprüngliche hallenartige Charakter der Kirche noch erhalten, während in die vorderen Seitenschiffe barocke Gewölbe eingezogen wurden. Das heutige Mansardendach erhielt die Kirche nach einem Brand in der 2. Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts, dabei mussten die oberen Fenster des Mittelschiffes zugemauert werden.

Von der ursprünglich gotischen Innenausstattung ist nur mehr das spätgotische Sakristeiportal erhalten. Der frühbarocke Hochaltar stammt vom Hans Waldburger, 7 Altäre sind Werke des berühmten spätbarocken Mondseer Klosterbildhauers, Meinrad Guggenbichler und sein Nachfolger Anton Koch wurde mit der Errichtung von 4 weiteren Altären beauftragt.

An den Kirchenwänden befinden sich zahlreiche Grabsteine von verstorbenen Äbten, darunter auch jener von Abt Benedikt Eck, der den Bau der gotischen Kirche in Auftrag gegeben hatte. Die markante Doppelturmfassade der Kirche ließ Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts der vorletzte Abt des ehemaligen Benediktiner-Klosters Mondsee, Bernard Lidl, erbauen.

2005 erhielt die Pfarrkirche von Mondsee den Ehrentitel einer päpstlichen Basilica minor. Der Papst kann diesen Titel einer besonders bedeutenden Kirche verleihen, völlig unabhängig vom Baustil. Erkennbar ist eine Basilica minor an dem angebrachten Papstwappen über dem Portal oder an einer anderen markanten Stelle der Kirche. In Österreich tragen 27 Kirchen diesen Ehrentitel, der Titel einer Basilica major, der einer noch höheren Auszeichnung entspricht, wurde weltweit übrigens nur 7 Mal vergeben.

Nice composition using the side buildings to lead the eye into the shot. The color of the buildings is contrasted nicely by the blue sky. The lighting is good as the sharpness and detail.

Beautiful basilica. The architecture (style) is quite different from what we are used to see here on TE. I believe you explain it in the note but unfortunately I can not read it. Anyway, the picture is spectacular with a nice POV and excellent colours.
