In Western culture the White Stork is a symbol of childbirth. If storchs really brought children, Rust - advertised as "the city of storks" should have population far bigger than Vienna! It has only about 1,700 inhabitants but, it is a Statutarstadt, as it was endowed with the rights of a free city by the Hungarian crown in 1681. (As my penfriend from there claims, "for wine" ;-))The city, located at the shore of the Neusiedlersee is famous because of its wines. And because of it's white storks. There are stork nests on many of the houses and the birds seem to feel good there. Well...sort of like in my region in Poland ;-)
My friend, who invited me to Rust wanted to impress me with those storks and funny thing was that when I invited her to Poland wanted to impress her with exactly the same thing for as far as I know, Poland has the biggest stork population. But I didn't know about Rust yet ;-)
The bird nests look nice, but see what those storks did to the roof, it would be worth the effort to teach them use the toilet... I wouldn't risk opening that window.

Chluba Rust - boæki. (Eeee tam, u nas te¿ s±)
Po³o¿one na brzegu wielkiego i p³yciutkiego Jeziora Nezyderskiego Rust ma tylko 1700 mieszkañców ale od 1681 roku cieszy siê statusem "wolnego miasta". Moja kumpela która tam mieszka twierdzi, ¿e prawa miejskie Rust otrzyma³o "za wino" ;-) Do dzi¶ wielu mieszkañców ma winnice, które wspó³tworz± malowniczy krajobraz.
Wróæmy do boæków. Rust reklamuje siê jako "miasto bocianów" i naprawdê zazdroszczê rustowiakom wprawy, z jak± wykorzystuj± ten skrzydlaty atut w promocji miasteczka. Bocianich gniazd faktycznie jest tam mnóstwo, choæ niestety kiedy tam przyjecha³am pod koniec sierpnia, wiêkszo¶æ z nich by³a ju¿ pusta. (Kupy bocianów już nie było. Kupy na dachach zosta³y.)
Zabawne by³o to,¿e kiedy kumpela odwiedzi³a mnie wcze¶niej w Polsce, chcia³am jej zaimponowaæ naszymi boækami, dok³adnie jak ona mi tymi z Rust ;-)A okaza³o siê, ¿e dla nas obu te ptaki nie s± wcale egzotyczne.
