Photographer’s Note

Joseph Haydn, one of the greatest figures of classical music who invented the form and structure of the symphony and the string quartet, developped the sonate form as the most important compositional principle till today and presented the world with so many beautiful masterpieces, died in 1809. He was first buried in Vienna then, in 1820, brought back to Eisenstadt where he had lived and worked for more than 40 years in service of the Esterházys. Since then he rests in the Bergkirche, also called Haydnkirche.

The Bergkirche was built between 1715 and 1803 according to the plans of Prince Paul I Esterházy, the same prince who ordered the erecting of the Haydn Hall and called Haydn into his court. In 1954 the Haydn Mausoleum was installed in the church.

I hope you will like my photo and note but believe me, meeting two giants (Haydn and Rostropovich) is far more exciting. Try it!
