I met this man in the village cafe of Kapinove which is right at the foot of Tomorri Mountain. Nifty new cafes like this one are now present in most Albanian villages. This one was spotlessly clean, flash new coffee equipment and a view to die for. Large LCD TV showing minute by minute news as it happens anywhere in the world real time was brightening the corner. These cafes serve many purposes and although you can find the finest Italian espresso here for some 30 pence a cup having a coffee is hardly the most important service. This is the social centre of the village. The man in this photo was in his late 80s and a very pleasant man indeed and full of interesting stories.

What a delightful looking man! Did you have a good conversation with him? I bet he would have some fine stories to tell and I'm sure he appreciates the improvements in villages with these cafés - or does he still prefer "the good old days"? Good Italian espresso coffee for 30p a cup sounds good to me. And maybe a little Rakia (from the strawberry tree!) as an extra treat?
I like the way you have captured him and his happy face from a low viewpoint. And, even against the bright light from the windows, you have managed to preserve good lighting on his face. The use of a wide aperture has thrown the background nicely out of focus too.
A Lovely Portrait!
P.S. Did you get his address so you could send him a print of your picture?

What a wealth of memorable stories this man should have at this age, if his mind is as clear as he looks. The changes his country has gone through during his lifetime is something to tell the young generations about. He has a nice face and your photo of him is well taken with well handled light.
