[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Mount Arenal is around 1,000 years old - a mere youngster in geological terms. Still, it's grown to a height of around 5,500 feet above sea level in that 1,000 years and continues to grow at about 1 foot per year.

Believed to be extinct, it proved the experts wrong in 1968 when it first erupted, killing many in the path of lava and rock.

We visited this awesome fire-mountain in the hope that it might blow off a bit of steam. Within minutes of our arrival at dusk (the best time to spot any glowing traces of lava) there was an almighty blast of rock from underneath its clouded summit followed seconds later by this pyroclastic flow.

There was a temptation to turn tail and run as the dust cloud headed towards us. In fact, we were several kilometres from the real danger zone and, despite getting a little dusty, no harm was done.

What a greeting from this impressive force of nature!

Techy stuff:

* As you can see, this was taken at 3200 ISO
* Hand-held (sadly no tripod with me)
* Processed in CS3. Slight boost to contrast and brightness
* A touch of smart sharpen
* No cropping

Hello Paul,
It's good to hear that you're ok! And I'm also glad to see that you had an eventful holiday in Costa Rica!
I can devide your photo into three parts: the powerful and dark dust clouds, the peaceful river with the fresh greenery, and the excited tourists amazed by the small eruption. Great photo!
TFS!
Best wishes,
Marci

merhaba paul,
A good capture of this interesting smoke a dramatic sky
very good pov,
congrats,
iffet

Whoa! It's scary! Still, I'd like to see it and be close to an active volcano. Did you get to see some bright red lava? The shot is good but I dont understand why you used ISO 3200. Was it that dark?

Hi Paul.
You get to some exotic places.
This is a terrific capture, with the visitors eagerly taking shots adding a sense of documentary immediacy, enhanced by the graininess. It's almost a kind of news shot. The composition is great, with the rushing river splitting the scene most impressively. The thick billowing smoke really does convey a good idea of the strength of the explosion. Really well done, and deserving of more recognition.
Regards,
Andrew
