Today I begin a Trinidad & Tobago travelogue with an image taken from the historic Fort King George, on the cliffs above Scarborough, Tobago’s capital. The fort is perhaps the best preserved of several on Tobago. Built in the 1770s by the British, the fort was later occupied by French troops from 1781 to 1793. Inspired by the French Revolution, the soldiers mutinied in 1790, imprisoning their officers and razing the town of Scarborough below.

Although several cannons remain in their original positions guarding the coast, the fort is now a peaceful refuge. The manicured grounds, historic structures and spectacular views are popular with locals as well as visitors. In a workshop I show a more extensive view of Rockly Bay and the coast of southeast Tobago, where most of the island's still small population is concentrated.
