Taking photos from a boat is not easy, I discovered, at least not when it’s extremely windy, as the case was for the entire two weeks. With the persistent swaying of the boat most of my shots needed the horizon straightening and many were blurred from motion, but I just kept shooting so that a good few turned out well enough. These four people were probably off to the shore for some dinner at one of few restaurants on Mustique, but I thought the title of “Nightshift” fitted the scene a bit better than “Off for dinner” ;-)

I experimented with the grad filters I had and this shot was achieved with a tobacco grad. Additionally I increased the colour temperature from the RAW file. The colours are not entirely faithful to reality but hopefully it appeals anyway.

“Nightshift” by the Commodores

Hello Susanna,
Very nice shot. Good management of light and sharpness give a peaceful athmosphere. Well done!

Hi Susanna
This looks like Lake Geneva light :-)
If you hadn't have said so, I would have thought it real.
I like the way the water is lit up over the little boat with the people on it. It looks almost silvery. The floating clouds give quite a lot of atmosphere.
Enjoy your evening.
Nikki

Olá Susanna,
Wonderful sunset compo! Amazing colors, good contrast...
well done

Beautiful shot, Susanna. The silhouettes are well placed and the reflections on the rippled water surface work well to amplify the atmosphere. I see a quite a few people using the tobacco filter, but I have rarely seen it used so appropriately as in this one, it really feels like a natural yet vivid way to enhance the tranquil mood of the scene. Thanks for adding it to the song theme.

Very very nice sunset. the mood is perfect, including the horizon, and the silhouette of the catamaran and the small boat. I also like details like the rare clouds and the waves, which give more points where to concentrate on this photo. The contrast is perfect.

Hi Susanna,
What to say... I feel like I'm looking to canvas of some old paint master of the realist era. Really beautiful image, great colors and impressive light. Well seen and captured.
Greetings,
Mirko

Salut Susanna
Une belle lumière, qui merite d'etre montrée. Un cadrage simple et soigné.

These kinds of filters need to be used very carefully. When I see shots taken in the middle of the day with one of these filters, I want to throw the computer through the window; just horrible!
Here, the colour of the sky matches the direction of the light; you would often get this kind of effect shooting into the light even without a filter. The colours don't look unnatural as this is what we would expect to see when looking at the setting sun. In that sense, the use of the filter has worked well.
What doesn't work though, is the top right corner. There, the effect is a little strong, the orange too intense. Maybe by selecting this area and then toning down the saturation here you could have produced a more believable result.
I also think this shot would have been improved by setting the camera to under-expose a bit more so that the boat was rendered as a pure black silhouette.
The composition is good though, and I know from experience that getting a level horizon from a moving boat is no easy matter, so well done there.
It's an almost but not quite image in my opinion, Susanna.

Cheers,
Ben

Susanna: easy to see why this one got so much attention, but not from the thumb. Great details and hues for a great sunset study. The boat is tack sharp. best, c

beautiful color , love the silhoettes in the sea..beauitful shot TFS
Donna:)

Hi Susanna,
Perfect shot, superb light!
Excellent colors and very good point of view. Thanks for sharing.
Best wishes. Uğur

Hi Susanna,
Very pleasant scene witt sun, sea and boats. Well, that's why people go there, don't they. I like the gentle waves and small clouds. I like the tone too, although the filter kicks in a bit too strongly on the upper edge.

Bonjour,
Superbe vue bien équilibrée.tres belles couleurs
Bonne journée.

Hi Susanna - "dinner at one of few restaurants on Mustique" ? I thought that was the exclusive haunt of celebrities like mick Jagger etc, maybe even inside this boat the fauna might be interesting and equally photogenic, anyway wonderful holiday shot, the filter makes the sky worthy of a postcard, which adds to the appeal even if it's not faithful to reality.

Hello Suzanna,
Nice picture. The colours are really fantastics, even if they was improved. Also a good composition with the sail boat.
Well done.

Hello Susanna,
Beautiful colors you created. I like those low clouds under the sun, gives a different view, mostly they are above the sun ... Light and compo are good as well. Well captured and good pp.

Hi Susanna,
The tones and hues here are very special, with the sky overwhelming in its beauty. I like how you caught the people in the little boat on their way to shore within the beam of light on the water. The dark angry clouds interspersed here and there add a slightly threatening note to the scene. Very fine work, Susanna.

Salut Susanna,
Très bel effet avec cette luminosité tamisée par les nuages, la tonalité générale est très plaisante avec ce filtre et ta composition avec ce bateau idéalement placé est bien vue.

Hello Susanna,

Your POV is perfect, the image is well balanced.
A great one.

JB.
