I took this photo the day after the Nicaraguan presidential elections. By this time it had become apparent that Daniel Ortega, leader of the FLSN (Sandanista) party, would be the next president. When he was last president of the country, Nicaragua was at war with the American-backed Contras. His campaign this time emphasized peace and used John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance" as its theme song.
Esteli has long been strongly supportive of the Sandinistas, and many pro-FSLN murals decorate its buildings. |
