Throughout the world, dogs compete with people for food, resources, comfort, space. And unlike people, dogs usually depend on people either to provide those things or at least respect the dogs and their ability to procure these things for themselves.
Central America is especially interesting. People themselves don't have enough to give dogs food and other necessary things, but they really seem to respect a dog's right to space in society. They are rarely pushed away, rarely intentionally mistreated. Dogs roam and scavenge among people who for the most part act as if they understand because they too are fighting to make it day by day. Children are chastised if they mistreat or rough handle dogs. And unlike in the US where dead dogs on the side of the roads is a common sight, I rarely saw dead dogs on the side of hte road here, mostly because people brake for dogs, something they apparently don't do for human pedestrians.
I have taken many photos of dogs in Central America. I'm sure others do, too. |
