Photographer's Note

This sign is a common one here in Kingston. Typically they are indeed mounted on signposts, this one probably fell victim to a car sliding through its legs. All over the city one can find these signs with their "catchy" slogans. Examples:

-Infant carriers carry infants safely
-Good drivers wait their turn at a stop sign, are you one?
-Running the red light may put out your light
-If your a careless overtaker, you may be in a hurry to get to the undertaker
-Stay alive, don't drink and drive

Despite the somewhat painful puns and rhymes, the signs are actually a welcome sight. Visitors often complain about the lack of road signs in Jamaica. I won't argue that there isn't such a lack, for there most definately is. However, after driving the roads here for a while, you learn to interpret what signage there is. Anytime one sees a sign like this, you know that a major intersection is coming. This tells you to slow down, for even a full month after Hurricane Ivan, a number of the stoplights in town are still out of service. This also tells you, if you have a map on hand, at least roughly where you are. Here the sign actually has "Dunrobin Ave." across the top, an unlookedfor bonus.

Pedestrian fatalities in the city are down this year, by 15-25% depending who you talk to. But I often drive here after dark, and have to pay very close attention ahead of me. The city streets are curvy and rough, and pedestrians often have to walk in the street itself, as debris or other blocks the sidewalk if there is one. The pedestrians are dark-skinned to begin with, and habitually wear dark clothing with no reflectors--not readily seen until very close.

I would have liked to sharpened this picture, but was unable to do so without leaving artifacts. Workshops are welcome, I'll post the original as my workshop. PP, cropped, corrected for overexposure.
